First Arowana

Hi peeps.

Since 4 days I was gifted a silver arowana and I love it But I have a few questions that I can't seem to find online.

1. about temperature: right now my tank is 25 degrees celcius. Is that ok? Or should I get a heater? What's the ideal temperature? (I live in Mauritius so temperature throughout the year doesn't vary that much

2. About Feeding:
a) What can I feed him? the pet store fed him Hikari Foodstick which he seems to love but i'd like to vary his diet. He eats freeze-dried bloodworms but still prefers his foodsticks. tried tubiflex but would spit it out. what other options are there? I just want to add variety. And i'd like to avoid live food.
b) and how much do I feed him? do I feed him until he doesn't want to eat anymore or slightly less? I feed him once per day mostly in the afternoon.

The Silver Arowana is eating that is the biggest hurdle. I wouldn't really worry about the Tubifex Worms they are low in nutrition. Just keep offering other foods in your feeding routine. Please be aware Silver Arowana grow fast. The 77° temperature is ok. You could even set temperature to 80° with no problem. Once a day feeding is fine. Don't worry about feeding it until it is full or you will be standing there feeding for a long time lol.
When you recognize a small bulge in the Aro's stomach it will be fine until the next feeding.

Very important to have heavy or lids that lock. Silver Arowana are powerful jumpers. Lost my Silver a few years ago from jumping out.

Speaking of which, how much weight do you reckon i'll need on the lid? Right now i have a pvc lid that just rests on the aquarium. Quite hefty but i have no frame of reference to compare

That's pretty good. You could add clamps or Velcro strip to the flap.

Welcome to the real world of monster fish keeping Arowana can be a more challenging species to keep (e.g. jumping as tlindsey mentions, fast growth rate, etc.) but also a very rewarding one. Check out the Arowana sub-forum Sticky threads for lots of good info, and also plenty of members around with good experience keeping them. Best of luck and show us some good pix when you can.

I've been reading them religiously since yesterday ?. I've had my fish tanks for almost a year with the intention of having one of those monsters one day but didn't felt ready so i kept angels and gouramis (along with neons... One of my first newb errors) until my dad gave me an early birthday gift.
Here's the guy (or gal). Named him Valtteri... Because of Valtteri Bottas... From the Mercedes F1 team... The Silver Arrow... And it is a silver aro...
