You guys are getting topsoil? Maybe 3-4 inches before it’s all clay by me.

Our houses are about 12 years old now, we've lived in ours for about 8. I didn't realise how thin the top soil was until I was doing some work in the garden a few years ago.

I spoke to our next door neighbour, who has lived in his since it was built, and he said all the houses around our way are in the same boat regarding the measly layer of top soil.

Apparently the building company who got the contract to build them tried saving money left right and centre, and saving money on top soil was one of the areas! Not a problem unless you are a keen gardener, then it can cause you issues with drainage etc.

I said rent as a joke, but online forums are hard to joke on haha. I’m borrowing the jackhammer from a friend. It has a clay spade, so it cuts through hard dirt really smoothly. Almost done.

If I was doing a big project such as this I would meticulously think things through, over and over in my head. I would even do an artist's impression of what the finished product would look like, to get a proper feel for the job.

Are you working to such a plan, or are you just making it up as you go along, changing things as you go?

Is that white PEX pipe a water pipe? Did you know it was there, or did you just get lucky that your jackhammer didn't slice through it?
