Speaking of consoles and hardware...does anybody remember Vectrex? It was an all-in-one console/monitor/controller that was available back in the 80's; a hulking, heavy black box that had the controller stored in a slot at the front. When you pulled out the controller, it was connected to the main unit with one of those black coiled cables reminiscent of old-style telephones. Various games were available for it on separately-sold cartridges. The graphics were very simple stylized "stick-figures", strictly black-and-white. Terrific audio effects, sounded like a state-of-the-art sci-fi movie...in the 80's.
The motion, controlled with the joystick and a few buttons, was seamlessly smooth, no jerkiness or hesitation like many other games, even including stand-up arcade stuff. Very sexy.
I played it a lot and liked most of the games, especially the Vectrex version of Asteroids. The thing seemed quite well-made and well-constructed; when the attached controller finally gave up the ghost after about 10 years of use, I actually looked to replace it but they had vanished from the marketplace...and, of course, there was no internet to make finding another one as simple as it would be today.
