I have been dosing my planted tank daily with Seachem Excel and I just found out that it is famous for melting vals...oopps..
guess I will stop doing that haha

For SteveR: my 150g nitrate test results, looks to be about 50 mg/L, maybe a little less, as I figured it would be:
Hey what kind of fish is that in the middle of the tank on the bottom in the picture of your old tank with your GIANT lemon fins?
there is a rotkeil (redhead) severum, a syndontis notatus cat (silver one) and syno eupterus cat too.
It is the synodontis notatus I was referring too! Nice looking fish, I might have to try and track a few of those down! Thanks!

No wonder I can't beat 40ppm total - got to be some in the aquarium and if I'm starting with 20!

I wouldn't worry. nitrates in tap water are not an issue until you get much higher values.
that can lead to 'blue baby syndrome' which can be fatal in infants
nitrates in the gut are converted (reduced) back to nitrites and this can interfere with oxygen uptake in the blood..which can lead to a 'blue colour' and death in the infants.
this is why there are legal limits on nitrates in tap water.
here in Ontario, for example, I believe 20 mg/L is the limit. something like that.
