update, good news and bad news.

good news: all 6 barbs (4 lemons, 2 red tinfoils) are eating like crazy and growing rapidly now. they are in a real growth spurt. all are wolfing down tetra cichlid sticks until they swell up like balloons.

bad news: the redhooks are not getting much food at all now. I will have to see if I can still keep them or not. if they learn to be more aggressive at eating then they will be fine. if not, I will have to sell them, I won't let them waste away.
If you decide to unload the Red Hook's, let me know! I would probably take them off your hands if you would be willing to ship them to me!

you should get regular dollars.. mine fight my angelfish and others for their food... redhooks are more delicate when it comes to feeding.
ime its the exact opposite, my redhooks have alway dominated my other dollars at feeding time

sorry, they already went to the LFS after I tried to keep them in the 50g.

bad idea. they go from looking smallish in the big tank to huge in the 50g LOL

okay, sort of a weird update.

for those of you who have read this thread all the way back from page 1, you know I have had issues with possible bacterial problems in two batches of barbs I had. stringy mucousy, whitish feces. one of the barbs with these problems went off its food. I tried to cure these fish with meds, to no avail.

fast foward to yesterday with all these lemonfin and tinfoil barbs.

I saw the same stringy feces in one tinfoil and a lemon fin.

naturally, I start freaking out. lol

and today, they ate more than they ever have before in one feeding.

so, what is going on? other than the one barb that actually did go off its food, where ANY of previous barbs actually sick?

could this simply be an artifact of the relatively high protein diet?

could it be from the freeze dried plankton I feed fairly often?

what the heck is going on?

I am really starting to believe that these fish, even though they show this classic problem symptom on occasion, are not sick at all.

they are eating too well and are growing way too fast and are otherwise looking way too healthy to think they are sick.

if they did pick something up, it has been in my care, which means it would have been transferred from the bushynose plecos that have been in the tank since day 1. on the other hand, if these plecos were sick, in a year and half they would have been long dead by now. and they are perfectly fine..

not too many things stump me in this hobby anymore after 22 years at it, 8 of which in a LFS with 180 tanks, 1500g shark tank etc.etc.

I have seen just about everything at one time or another.

but I am stumped on this one.

irregardless, I am not doing anything about this observation.

not unless they start showing some signs of wasting away, or not eating etc etc.

keep your fingers crossed everyone LOL

Close up shots would be good. Get the shutter speed high, the ISO higher and as much light as possible from the ceiling and snap them!
