I've been dabbling with the idea of leaving the outside just the 2x4s and then putting a sturdy top and bottom railing on it to cover up any screw holes. It will be hell to finish, but will definitely help in the long run money wise. I think it could definitely hold the pressure without the outer skin, but I'm the type of person to overdo everything lol. Thanks for everyone's concerns and ideas! I'll be doing some work on it tomorrow.

Well....if you really want to go with a rustic look it after its finished, get some rough grit sand paper and rough up the 2x4's prior to staining with a flat finish not gloss. I love the rustic look personnally....but then again....living in a log house I'm kinda prejudiced about it. ;o)
