Thanks guys. I really appreciate all the support. It's gonna be tough to order the stuff to seal with on wensday. Some unexpected bills to pay!!!! I'm gonna count the money in my fish fund jar and see what I've gotten so far, plus I have a customer's tank tomorrow, and I'm gonna try to give plasma today. We'll see how that works out. Glad to hear that some of you love filtersocks so much. Now the only question is what micron to get? Seems that most are 100 microns. Not sure which is a finer mesh, 100 or 200? Never really investigated microns lol
A couple things about sock filters.

They clog easily, so pre-filtering is a MUST.

The larger the number, the bigger the particles are that get through. In example, A 200 micron will catch particles bigger than 200 and I think including 200 microns.

A good way of working with sock filters is to put a larger micron size inside a smaller one. In example, a 200 inside a 100. The 200 acts as a prefilter for the 100.

I'm going to use a prefilter that catches anything above 150-200 microns and have 100 inside a 50 and 25 inside 10.

Ack that **** happens to me all the time!

100micron is what I use. McMaster.com has filter socks for much cheaper than fish supply places usually do. I use the polyester felt ones.

Great link and good info guys. Is there a size that's too small and may remove nutrients that are vital to an aquarium? Do you just stuff them inside each other or do they need to be seperated a little. Like one sitting slightly higher than the other? Sorry for so many questions I just have to incorporate this into my design, and need to do it in a hurry lol.

Just as a quick update I added some more plywood to the inside of the tank today. My plan is to have all the wood work done to the inside of the tank in two weeks. I'll put in the fittings for the plumbing, and fill all the gaps and do the fiberglassing. Hopefully I can get it done! lol, anyone want to come and help?

I found that going much smaller than 100, they plug up super fast. You can't really stuff them inside each other, if you want to do stages like 250 micron, then 100, then 50 or something, you would have to set it up so that there was room for each stage of filtration... makes it easier to maintain that way too. I'd highly recommend buying one and having a look at it and measuring it before designing anything.

with a filter and tank as big as yours you could try using i giant microfiber blanket perhaps. Seen that done at the lfs. The have a 150 gal sump full of bio balls with a giant microfiber blanket ontop. Then they have a 3in pvc spreader/sprayer bar over it. They have 2 of these blankets and just switch them out when they get dirty. I think the sump filters a set of like 10 or so 40gal breeders. Just another option. Microfiber rools weeeee!

k bye

Ok, so would 250 micron sock set 4" above a 100 micron sock, and 4" above a 50 micron sock work? lol I think running them seperate would be extremely difficult. The best I could probably do is run the 200+ sock at the first stage of filtration, and then a second sock before it empties into the tank. I'll have to get a few and play around with some ideas. Might just get several 100 micron socks and leave it at that, just keeping some of them to clean, and while the others are doing their jobs. I think they'll probably clog quickly in a 4000 gal anyway, I'll just have to make sure to switch them out often.

oh, and for heat for this tank I'm thinking an inline 7kw heater. It's one of those instant water heaters. I can just run cold water straight in during water changes and it'll heat it up, and I can also run it inline with a small pump to keep the water a constant temp in the tank. Won't really have to worry about space heaters and heating the whole garage as much during the winter. I would think that with 3" thick walls almost solid wood that it would hold it's heat fairly well anyway.
