425 Gallon Pond/Outside Tank Build

Has potential like someone said though bleach then drain and refill then drain then refill then I always double up the water conditioner and let it sit filters running for 48 hours to soak up any possible bleach then drain and refill with conditioned water. Safe method. Also make your own overflow and have it go to an easily irrigated area try to keep it away from the bottom of the tank or you will have a concentration of mud and nasties around it making it less enjoyable.

i appreciate the help everyone, i stopped by the lfs today and talked to the owner. he said since i amgoing to have it running for over a month before i put fish in it that i only need to rinse it thoroughly and put water back in it with some aqua plants from lows or home depot, is he telling me right? he also said that he does not think i will need any subsantial filtration b/c my fish will only be in there for 3 months so i just need to get a pond filter that will break the water surface

"my first plan is to cut the top off of it"

I'd cut from the top, about 2 inches in, that will leave some strength from the lid for the sides.

just got finished cutting the top of and we cut about 2.5 inches from the top (wher ethe top starts) and am going to put some water in it tonight to let the dust and what not soak in the water over night....it gonna be pretty sweet

your gonna need some type of filtration, you need to get rid of the ammonia, ammonia will kill your fish, so you will need to cycle this tank just like any other, ammonia is a fast killer.

this thing is like 400 gallons so your gonna need something to house bb to support your bio load,
the simple way would be to do an ugf/rfugf so you can use the substrate to house your bb, or you could do an over the top filter with some scrubbes/filter pads and a pond pump, there are many options
but i disagree with ur lfs every body of water needs a way to remove byproducts and in an enclosted system such as a tank that means a cylced tank and water changes

wat is a ugf/rfugf? and could i just use like a canister filter of some sort? i have to fluval 404s is u think they would work but i was not sure about them being out in the elements

a canister would be much better then ugj
an undergravel filter is when you set up your gravel on top of a plate that will either push or pull flow throw the substrate allowing the substrate to grow bb while collecting waste,
but the 404 would be a much better option, i was just tring to think cheap diy

i think a over the top filter will work the best and servive the elements i draw on up so can see how it works

over th top filter

pump is in the tank
pulls water to a over tabk compartment water goes through the media and then gravity takes it back to the tank

put a cover on it and it will be fine out side
also do a thread search and you will see abunch that people have made

its can be set up like a wet dray in you get the right size pump and a dripp tray

wow thank you for the help, the diagram simplifies it greatly. i have an old pond fountain pump, do you think that would be sufficient to get the water to the top of the filter. i am going to search the threads and i will ask any more questions if i have some after reading...i appreciate all of the help thus far. i am going to clean and fill the tank with water tommorow if all goes according
