I haven't read the entire thread, but you don't plan on leaving the copper pipe bits in there, do you? Copper is toxic to freshwater fish.. I mean, I assume you knew that, but I figured I'd point it out just in case.
Actually they are in there as stand-offs for the egg crate diffuser floor (I ran out of marrets). there's only about a total of 1' to 1.5' copper. I think I remember looking into it and they are bad only for invertibrates or when they are in their ionic (liquid) state. I think they are stable in their solid state. Any way I still coated them with epoxy to seal them from the water.

It will really help reduce condensation not to have that large uncovered pond liner thing full of water. Also, try to put tight lids on your tanks, sump,etc.. Some air will get in through the lids (good) but lids can greatly reduce evaporation which is causing your excess humidity.
It will be a little difficult to cover either the sump or the tank. I only have about 2' room on both plus my lightings. But the real moisture generator monster is my Bakki shower. BAkki shower with bacteria house breaks down the water in smaller molecules and earates the water a lot (this cools the water a lot). This way it can degas amonia before it even breaks down to nitrates. I knew about this moisture problem it will create but I wanted this filter system since it is the best out there. When I shut it down months ago my moisture problem was gone even with only the small exhaust fan running (this way I am not exhausting out too much heat). Now that it is warm here I got my full bakki shower running again with my big exhaust fan.

WOW I started reading this thread 3 days ago what an adveture and an inspiration. I Just began construction of my sumpand I think I will take some of your construction techniques to build it. put it into practice befor I build my big tank. my sump is 46 3/4L X 22 1/2 X 24T it is roughly 120G I think. it is built out of wood and I think I will line it with PVC I have the box built but thats it so far (I started today) I love the ideas and the info on failed attempts.it saves us making the same mistakes. great Job Great thread great all around such an inspiration and a kick in the but to get going on my DIY Projects.

Makes sense.. I had a problem with a lot of tanks that were not covered in my house.. I was getting tons of humidity all over the house. When I tightly covered (not airtight) the tanks, my humidity readings went down about 25% over a few weeks. It was bad in the winter when the tanks were quite a bit warmer than the rest of the house.. I can't remember if your tank is room temp or not.. just trying to help.. Awesome tank. Glad you go the humidity under control.

I am thinking of shutting down my sump permanently. Right now even with our hot weather here I still have to use my 1000 W heater and it is operating about 70% of the time. I am setting up a 50 G tank just for my discus and I am still deciding if I will hook up the water to the main tank and settling tank or just to the sump alone and keep sump running with plants. But the bakki shower deffinitely have to go. Having a refurigrum(I still can't get that spelling right) in the sump doesn't justify the cost of electricity for lighting and heater. Unless maybe with out the bakki shower so water will not loose to much heat.

That seriously sucks that you're going to take the bakki shower down. Have you tried building an enclosure for it? If all else fails, please pm me. I might be very interested in purchasing your bacteria house media if you decide to sell it.

Thanks,

Steve.

It will be a bit hard to figure out a way to limit the heat loss in the water with the bakki shower when room air temp is about 18 C. My fishes are really doing good with it too bad it has to go. It's still running now. I'll shut it down maybe mid October. I am planning on hanging my bacteria house in the settling tank although I don't think I really have to. With the amount of surface area I have in my background and gravel, bio filter should be OK, although there is no such thing as OVER-BIOFILTRATION. I'll PM you if I sell them.
