Isn't the ABS a bad idea, as far as leaching back into the aquarium. If not is it salt water safe as well, why do we use PVC fittings instead of ABS which is much cheaper

Yes ABS is safe as PVC. I have a link to a thread with informative debates on the topic but Reefcentral requires registration now so I cant access them anymore. Bottom line of the thread is that ABS is just as safe as PVC and "leaching out" story is just a myth. I got the info from reefcentral so I am sure they are talking about saltwater application. Freshwater wise.... My tank is now 10 months old and I am not seeing any problems and I used a lot of abs pipe and my whole lining is abs as well.

I set up a 50G discus tank on my main floor of the house and the water is hooked up to my settling tank. I have to run 72' of abs pipe, for return and pumped water, to this tank. It's only been 2 weeks but the discus are doing great. I think this should be a good experiment if abs has any bad effects.

Thanks for the info. Have done a bunch of research on the ABS and am secure now in using it. Have a hard time finding PVC in our area, HD & Rona only carry a small selection of it yet the ABS is plentiful in 1.25 & 1.50 diameters. I went through this post and saw the cost per sheet but didn't see where you purchased it. Can you use silicon to seal the tank or do you need to use the GOOP. I am doing a FOLR saltwater tank right, using pond liner glued to the plywood with a glass cutout front window. This is the precursor until next summers 8 x 4 x 2 build.

I got my abs sheet from a local window installer shop here. I would think that you would be able to source it out easier in your area. GE and other common silicone will not stick to ABS sheet. DOW has lots of different silicone for special application, I read somebody using DOW for an acrylic tank. Check out DOW site for their special silicones. I also did a pond liner & glass tank using goop for temporary housing of my discus and it worked OK.

Shut down my bakki shower filter. Water just circulates from the main tank to the settling tank where I have my pump. I am building a sump style tank that will go beside the settling tank replacing my bakki shower filter. overflow from the settling tank will go the the new tank beside it and it will just be a submerged media filtering. I might put some air hose at the bottom of the media chamber so that I can pump air to the media exposing it to more air. also thinking of building a denitrator. New filter tank is L3' X W1.5' X H3'. Tank is made of plywood and ABS sheet and with the GOOP tilting method. Hoping to finish it with in the next 2 weeks.
