A dark day

A dark day today. My project endi-that I picked up mid december at 3" had been growing fast and doing great-Very rare fish where I am.

This morning I came downstairs and went to feed him in his 10 gall tank. NO WHERE to be found!!!!! You probably can guess where this is headed. On the floor behind the tank stand, dried up was one of my favorite fish. I had been so carefull as I know bichers are jumpers. The only opening is the 3/4" gap where the hang on filter flow is/all other areas are sealed.
I still cannot believe that he got through.

This SUCKS, such a great fish-I feel that somehow I should have forsaw this and some how covered this. I have not had the loss of a fish affect me this much.

u know what to do....

Fish can get out of any gap they fit through and often do. Its a shame, but a lesson learned.

Chop its head off, boil for a while and tweeze the meat off. Swish it in the boiling water to loosen the rest of the meat and repeat. Keep tweezing and swishing until all the meat is off and then let it air dry. Souvenir from your dead endi. Be careful not to bust it though, its small and weakens when boiled.

Sorry for your loss

OR
Disection Preservation
If you have the desire to dissect one of these some points to be aware of
1) use scissors insert the point into the vent and cut up to the pectoral fins
2)the main organs lie in the 6 0'clock position
3) beware the dorsal finlets they are still sharp
4) the spinal colum is in the center of the body
5) there are two large muscles one in each upper quadrant and 2 smaller muscle section on the bottom quadrant on either side on the internal organs running the length of the body-Anne

Preservation
use 70% alcohol for preservation (or at least maintenance of perservation) of our specimens...this is diluted from the 95% stuff we keep on hand in the lab. the actual preservation/fixation, however, is done with formaldehyde. if the fish is larger than just a few inches then i cut the belly (much like joe was saying about injection) so the chemical can enter into the insides of the fish and preserve everything. the fish stays in the form. solution for a couple days. if its a gar or bichir, a fish that has rigid bony scales, then i take the fish out after 2-3 days and just let it air dry. the fish is now dry preserved.

if im doing a standard preservation i take the fish out after 2-3 days and let it sit in a container of water to soak out the formalin. after a day in the water the fish is removed and placed into a container of 70% alcohol for long-term preservation.

as far as using other alcohol, i think as long as its relatively pure and the proof is about 140 you should be ok...in theory

I've got a dubble fold towel with the air pump on top, over the cord hole to prevent any escapes.

It sad when you have learn it the hard way - Sorry for you loss
