I soak the socks in a bucket of bleach solution for a day or two and then blast them with a hose. I use about four gallons a water with maybe 1/2 to one cup of bleach. I just pour it in without measuring, so it is hard to say. The bleach dissolves the organic sludge (200 micron socks can pack a lot of gunk in the felt) and then the hose blasts out the pinkish colored silt-like residue that is left. I also have to turn them inside out and hose them every few washes, as I have sand that gets into them and builds up (bleach doesn't do anything to sand).

I think that if you bleached them first you could probably get them pretty clean in the sink without stinking up the house. As far as bleach residue, if you have enough socks so that you can let them dry out thoroughly it isn't an issue - I've never used any sort of dechlorinator, just a good rinse and let them dry.

The one on the left as you can see has thinner handles and the ring is not as well built. The right one is a great filter sock.

Here is what I was talking about all the fuzz and more or less what I figure is the sock just falling apart. As you can see the other has no fuzz at all and its been used much much longer and more because of only having a few and using them allot.

I just add a cup of bleach to a bucket of water and soak the sock.
I just add dried sodium thiosulfate to water, a 5 gal bucket of the dry lasts forever . Normal salt, sodium chloride, is not the same. Sodium thio is available from chemical company's, and lab suppliers like Fisher Scientific.

^ HA! I read about wife complaints a lot regarding washing filter socks in the washer. What's the big deal? It's not like if the socks ruin the washer or make a mess. All the stuff gets drain out
Exactly. And for those that travel as much as I do, having the wife soak the socks in a bucket and do all this while Im away for months at a time gets real old real fast for her. She was actually the one who asked me if we could start doing them in the washer to save her the hassle :)

Different strokes for different folks, but we are bleaching them at the end of the day. No mess, no smell besides bleach makes a much happier wife in my house.

To each his own.....

thanks for the pics!
i do like the look of the seal ring handles more after seeing them side by side. It looks better built and has more low profile handles, giving you more space in the middle of the ring. Looks like the polypropylene ones are holding up a lot better over the polyester ones too. Cost is only 25 cents more at $4.94 vs $4.69. Im going to exchange the ones i ordered and give these other ones a try.

ya sorry I didnt post everything sooner, been really busy with all sorts of stuff going on at work and home, ya the difference between the two is a good bit. So far from what I have seen the polypropylene ones will last lots longer, especially when the handles break and you can hang them anymore.

no prob! thanks for all your help. I'm sure this helped a lot of other people too. I just got off the phone with mcmasters. Just placed a new order for 10 of the polypropylene socks with the pressure seal rings. Will be sending the polyester ones back as soon as they get here.
