I'm using poly fiber now. I buy huge rolls of it for cost effective concerns and I cut to fit for all my sumps. I change it out once every two week give or take a little. I never reuse the stuff, just pitch it in the trash.
My question to this post is:
Are you paying more now for the sock filters or the same, or less than your poly fiber system?
Ease of changing the poly fiber vs the filter sock
Do you think the over all quality of the water is better with the socks? or the same?
The price for the socks has gone down for me as I now get them for around 3 bucks a piece from mcmaster carr and as I posted I am still on the same six I bought in '09. I was paying 13 bucks for the felt polyester ones from our LFS, that is the reason I switched to poly fiber in the first place. The cost of the polyfiber is what made me go back to socks, I think the last package was 6 bucks for 30" x 18". Never thought about searching for it in bulk, that prolly coulda saved me a bunch.
The polyfiber is way easier to maintain, no doubt about it. Just toss it and swap in a new pad. Thing is I could not get a week w/ out needing to change pads. It would start to clog by day three and overflow by day five. If I doubled the layer same results with twice the loss.
Results are the same. Polyfiber works pretty well actually no complaints with water quality. My problem with it was overhead. The only drawback I find with using socks is in the cleaning and the polypropylene takes an extra minute or two compared to the polyester ones. Some here use their washing machine but my wife will have no part of that so it is the laundrymat in the winter and garden hose when weather allows for me.
