ACCIDENT ON MY MONSTER FISH TANK

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
a backup generator is the way to go, especially for outages that last more than 24 hours. i have battery powered air pumps that are ok in short term outages, you can easily hook them up to a foam filter and have some water movement and aeration.

wow, i would be in tears losing those beautiful arowana.. as much as i complain about my bratly w/c aros it would break my heart if i lost them.

crappy feeling when that happens, happened to me last month when the power went out but the only thing i lost were my 6 SAE's. i would be devistated if it was anything like your loss.

1. Sorry for your loss.

2. I think there may be some lessons in this for all of us about what precautions need to be taken in case of power-failures:

Questions: How long was the power out? When was the last water-change done in that tank? What were the other fish in that tank? and Tank Size?

I am especially surprised about the Aros not making it (due to the air-pump being off), because I have read from several sources that Arowanas (at least Silver Arowanas) can breath air from the atmosphere (i.e. by gulping air from the surface).

This is why, in one of the rare power-cuts in my part of Bombay, I am least worried about my tank with the Silver Aro and the Gars.

Is this not correct?

I have a couple of battery operated air-pumps, but I have bought those for my Malawi tank (and the grow-out). I think I may need to get another one for the Silver Aro tank.

Regards,
Sid

sid, i've heard that silver aros can breath air too.. they have something that resembles a lung for that purpose. but they also need to be able to breath normally in the water. i don't think being able to gulp air now and then is a substitute.
