Best Cichlid for a 30 Gallon Tank

I'll take your word for it. It just seems strange, the only tank I ever saw with jewels they were pretty cool. I guess the fact that there were crencichla in there too should have topped me off.

Jewels aren't called the convicts of the westies for nothing.

Glad kribs are an option, they are cave spawners and very docile when they have fry. I have yet to keep them but many people I know do and they never complain of angry kribs :)

As far as aggression, I'm pretty aware of all the heavy hitters. I keep them almost exclusively, Parachromis and amphs more than anything over the years. (Probably why my son digs the predators) Regardless, those big personality fish seem to be favorites because they have a degree of interaction with the person feeding them and that keeps you interested. Unfortunately they seem to kill each other more often then some of the more community tolerant species. I did have a jewel at one point and it was definitely a huge a-hole. Considering it's size it did really well against bigger fish. I know how it gets when fish like that get to breeding so I'll probably go with the less aggressive ones because I won't have to explain why Dad killed Mom two weeks after they had fry. He's an animal lover so that would probably throw him for a loop. Kribs seem like the safer bet and it looks like they have them at That Pet Place which is about an hours dive from my house. He's designing caves we are going to build with rocks we find and silicone together, pretty cool idea. Here is the sketch he drew up.

What's the footprint? Is it the standard 36"x12" for a 30 gal? If it's cube like the drawing suggests, a pair of kribs wouldn't be the best idea. They can be rough in small spaces.

It's great that you are getting him into the hobby at a young age. My dad did the same with me, and I have loved aquariums my whole life.
Drawing looks nice, perhaps he will be the next amano!

We I was 6-7 we had two 4ft community tanks and a 4ft with an oscar... That tiger oscar is the reason I'm here, I've kept cichlids my self since I was 14, I'm now 34... Still learning.
I think kribs are a great choice, finding some albino kribs would be even better.

My wife and I are both artists so he's got to have some knack for drawing and aesthetics. He's 9 now, so it's a good bit of responsibility, but all of my kids work around the house so the labor shouldn't be something I have to fight him over. I've had him hang drywall with me already.

I didn't get my first tank until high school when I had my own money. My parents had one when I was small and told me that the red tailed shark we had, was in fact a real shark, and it was mine. Something stuck after that. Possibly why I've always wanted the big bad fish. I'm 35 now so that's about 20 years of tanks. There is where all my money went.
