Breeding Projekt Pleco or Oddballs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you have a good LFS it is always worth a try asking them if they can get what you want next time they place an order for themselves.

I'm not usually an "oddball" type of guy, I just go for what's on offer at the shop. The only time I wanted something which they didn't have was when I fancied a flagtail. I asked, and they got me one, easy.

If you want something that they can't get then they may have a contact for you, or you can roll your sleeves up and do your own research.

Dwarf puffers are known to be difficult, but still breedable.
If you like convicts, I’d say go for it. There are also many rarer relatives to convicts that could be more fin, like nanolutae or rainbows. Of course almost all cichlids aren’t too hard to breed.

Welcome to MonsterFishKeepers! My suggestion is dwarf chain loaches, they have only been bred by a few and are not a bread/butter species like say livebearers.
Looking into breeding them myself, so I might be able to give you tips.

Last paragraph here covers breeding.

Another article on it.
thank you so much looking forward to breeding them
this is a cool idea

Try Cory catfish. Some are relatively easy and a good start, others more of a challenge and the word I hear is that we are going to find them harder and harder to get hold of over the coming years. Another alternative may be the dwarf cichlids like apistogramma but my issue with these is their high price and hence shops find them harder to sell. A bit of a circle, you breed lots and the price will come down but in the mean time you need a number of shops moving on your stock till it does, and when it does it becomes less profitable.
One more option is koi fighters, but that will require dedication and multiple small tanks to separate offspring.
Not sure of any shippers as use local shops who can generally get anything I ask for. Don’t do delivery as prefer to go see the fish I am buying.
Problem with breeding something that has hardly been done like chain loach is that if you can’t make it happen, you lose interest, so always worth having something slightly easier on the go too.
