Hi wizzin, I've been following your progress. I've got a concrete tank project coming up and, like TheFishGuy, I am interested in your experience with sanitred. I am trying to decide between sealing with epoxy or sanitred. It sounds like you were happy with the way it coated your walls. How about using it when you installed the glass? How did that compare to using silicon?
Hi. Welcome. I've been pretty happy with the sanitred, but haven't used the epoxy either, so it's not fair for me to compare the two. With the Sanitred, a few things I
wasn't thrilled about finding out after buying it.
1. The permaflex is labled as a single component with no mixing, however, it does have an activator that you have to mix, which is difficult because you have to figure out the mix ratio based on the bottle of activator to the gallon of permaflex if you're mixing less than a gallon, which was my case.
2. The odor isn't bad, and is about like latex paint, however, after being exposed to it for a long period of time, I did feel a little light headed. Of course, I think you'd get the same thing with latex paint.
3. They didn't send me detailed instructions.
4. When I ordered, I used their online pool coverage calculator. I selected concrete block as the material to be covered, and entered the size (close to it anyway) and it suggested 1 gallon to cover in 2 coats. I ordered that, and called later about a question I had. While I was talking to the rep, I mentioned that I used the calculator and bought 1 gallon. He said that the coverage was for poured concrete, not concrete block, and that I'd need 4 coats to cover concrete block. I then ordered another gallon. I agree that it does take 4 coats to cover concrete block. They should revise their calculator, or I should've called and ordered instead of online.
Other than those things, the stuff is great! The LRB stuff is WAY cheaper than using silicone to seal the glass. It's a little more work, but a ziplok bag with the corner cut off works great as a piping bag. I actually went with sanitred because of that. I was more comfortable with the permaflex to lrb connection than with an expoxy to silicone or expoxy to lrb connection since it's by the same manufacturer and they claim excellent adhesion between the two. I actually couldn't afford in my budget to use silicone for the glass and corners of the tank, so it was sanitred all the way from the begining.
Hope this helps.
