Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

Thanks f1. I guess i just need to buy a new api kit then.
Im likn this aspect of fish keeping a whole lot more.
Now if I could only find a crazy hybrid pothos plant.

I'm sure there is some crazy tropical plant out there that would work just as good with the roots submerged, unfortunately Lowes or home depot doesn't have every species of plant LOL so pothos wins for now!

As for the API kit I suggest just buying the nitrate test only, unless your unsure if your tank is cycled. As long as Ph stays consistent then your good!

krusty, great report. Gee, congrats on the store benefits!
Did you only mean they glue the underwater plants to wood for roots attachment, or did they do that to pothos stems too?
oh, and did they start out with just clippings or pothos in already rooted? that's fast nitrate reduction.

The pothos cuttings are all from my house, made from the ones that grow on my trees in the yard, I started the cuttings for them in my flowerhorn tank so there would be some roots to start with. The anubius and java fern, I glued to the wood, not the pothos and philodendron. Those two underwater plants naturally grow attached to wood so the coral glue was just to get them started until their own roots more firmly attach to the wood. The anubius and java fern will grow up the wood until it gets to the surface.

Now there are several tanks around the store with cuttings hanging out of the tanks where they are too lazy to do water changes. They move the cuttings around....

Lol, talk about innovation, this sticky went from a simple plant helping to reduce a little no3 to lfs using them commercially to cut down on nitrates/wc and keep the fish healthy.

Awesome!

Nice!

Here are some recent pics of mine:

Can't get all the roots into one pic but its a massive flowing ball of roots and lately my piranhas have been hiding and playing in them:

Here's an idea I tried. Its a simple plastic bin with wheels. Its approximately 30"Lx8"Hx18"W, it fits so perfect I can slide the whole thing back and fourth on the lip of the rim, not only is it a lid for the tank but it also has a 100gph pump pushing water up thru the bottom and with two holes drilled towards the top of the bin the water will flow back into the tank, right now I have cloning crays in it but you could easily use it for a MASSIVE heap of pothos or any plants for that matter, multiple uses (Bio/mech/eggs/hatchlings/etc) and it holds 15gal!

You could literally put it on any of your tanks given its 18" width! I'm sure they make them in all different sizes as well!

Just an idea

Cheers to this wonderful plant, I don't think I would be able to adequately maintain my tanks/fish without it due to my job and reptiles. Not only does it cut cost on wc/dechlor etc but more importantly it saves me time and that my friends is ****ing great!

That plastic bin idea is what in gonna do also except its gonna be behind my tank flush with the rim so a power head pushing water In with the pothos and some pot scrubbies and a drain hole to flow back In the tank. More bio and less nitrates I love it!

Spot on! That will also keep the root debris out of your main filter! Sometimes the roots will die or the fish will nip them off depending on the species.

I would love if you documented that build or took a few pics along the way so others can explore their options when it comes to planting pothos in tanks! Thx

Eventually I will organize all the different techniques together in one simple list with a picture for an example plus supplies, price etc.

I find that some of my smaller geos like to try and hide in the roots. Eventually i"ll probably trim the roots back a bit. I like that idea of having them in a tub above the tank or off to the side. Ive got some thinking to do :)
