Denisonii (roselines) develop butterfly fins with age?

Just to add, I don't think hybridization is a factor here.

To expand on this, most of these fish are wild caught and the captive bred ones are bred in commercial facilities and IMO probably use hormones. It's not like Joe Schmoe is breeding these things in his basement with all sort of other fish in the tank.

Thats a good point. Every long finned fish I've ever kept always had long fins from juvis to adults. And none ever experienced a color change like yours. I know when Ive changed brands of foods, I've witnessed more intense colorings, but none that have changed completely. Could be a combination of things that you just happened to stumble upon. Tds, temp, food, etc.

I honestly have no idea.........
that is a very good point, in my case when i had my pond comets they would grow very long flowing fins but they would have them already longer than normal as juvies and they would just get longer as they approached adulthood. but nothing like this. ive even seen normal fish have fins that were a little longer then normal but still nothing near this kind of change and in such a short time span is very strange.

i agree with this point aswell, i have seen pictures of another fish that comes from the same area with very similar color though, but it never had long fins either so what would this fish be crossed with if it were crossed?, and it is much harder to cross regular fish then it is to cross cichlids or other like fish.

Hey Jose
I am a researcher, I havent seen such a fish in my life time in any wild habitats in Western Ghats( where the fish is Found)...It will be helpful for me to crack this if you can tell me whether you got it from an aquarist who sells captive bread ones or the wild ones!!!
Please let me know then i will try my best to crack this !!

Can you share the average water temperatures where you find this fish? From what I read online they can tolerate down to 59F and up to 77F (15 to 25C). I had no idea this was a sub-tropical species.

I've never seen "veil tail" type fins on a denisonii. I kept a few for about 16 months and mine had the standard fins.

I also just recently learned these actually come from more subtropical areas. I've never kept them personally, but we have some in a huge planted display at work that are huge and several years old and have the normal, bright yellow finnage

I'm no expert but here's my opinion ;)

Considering your set up with all the driftwood on there and the high temperatures:
They could be adapting at a super fast rate since they are normally in cooler conditions(way cooler) and your set up with all that driftwood makes them grow longer fins in order to navigate easier through the tank. I'm sure the longer fins help them make bigger/faster turns while swimming fast at the same time :)

They are awesome looking denisoniis! The fins reminded me of goldfish.

Anyway, just an educated guess, hopefully it makes sense.

More pictures! :D
