Difference between a Red Terror and Mayan Cichlid

Hey bro all the lfs recieve mayans as red terrors. I have gone thru the same as you in the past and I coerrected them and even worked at one before. But they say since that's the name they recieve them that's what they sell them as. They will also recieve true festae and label them the same. Once you get the hang of being able to properly I'd them it won't be a problem. I would suggest looking into a reliable source for festae. My friend fishluvr just had a batch, you could look him up and maybe get a group for good price.
Another thing is the "Y" on festae connect and mayans don't. Good luck and merry Christmas

Yea but when I am going to the LFS to get about $2 store credit for it as a trade in, I will tell them I bought it as a Red Terror but it is a Mayan so they will not mislead anyone like I was mislead.

Red Terror is just a common name for both, I wouldn't say it is their fault at all. Unless they have scientific names listed with them you shouldn't be mad at them in my opinion.

I have never, ever heard of that happening. Tell them they sold you the wrong thing. It was ignorance on their part and definitely false-advertising. You didn't get the fish you thought you were paying for. Bring your receipt and some pics of festaes and Mayans.

here is my 10" female Mayan for comparison of the earlier Festae shown.
if your fish is mayan this is how it turned out.
this girl had to be kept on her own she killed any other tankmate and tried to attack everyone through the glass. they are still very mean intersting and cool cichlids

The first picture in the thread looks like its an hybrid.
red terror and mayan are common names. mayans are sold as red terrors at most pet stores. If you want a festae buy one labled as festae.

I have heard of both as red terrors at a lfs, they had two types of red terror but next to each one they put the scientific name but they were both in the same name and were only a 2" long. I have only seen this once tho. I think both species are amazing looking. i currently have a mayan.

I got what I payed for it as a trade in so it is all good. It was a different LFS from where I bought it from. The manager of the store will call it a false Red Terror which is not misleading anyone.

A few years back I was collecting with a guy who owns a fish farm in Florida. We got on to the discussion of the Mayan Cichlid. He said, yes, the Red Terror. I asked why he called the uropthalmus that. He informed me that the majority of the fish farmers refer to that fish as the Red Terror. That's the problem with the common names. More than likely your LFS sold it to you as it was sold to them. Your best bet is to buy from one of the trusted vendors on this site if you want the A. festae.

If your LFS had the fish labeled Red Terror and the scientific name as Amphilophus festae, you got screwed and would be justified in getting back some $$. If not...buyer beware.

i have 4 juv mayans in my tank now, they where sold as festae,i went to another shop which had choc cichlids labled as festae and i bought 4,i still dont have festae, their is alot of this happening with fish from the asian stock,
