Difference between a Red Terror and Mayan Cichlid

Mayans probably do get an unfair rep. from festae owners. That's mostly because many of us were fooled into buying the wrong thing before we got the fish we really wanted. The adult Mayans I have seen are attractive fish, but I still prefer the festae.

i know it will be ok gruff master cause im only on a website talking about fish. i take it your a festa fan im just not a band wagon person festa are very beautifil cichlids but folks are going overboard. mayans are big ruff cichlids that really get after prey and thats what i like. the thing with me is i dont just take peoples word for things i try it my self to see not once but lots of times. its not just festa i also thing umbee are overated. and there are fellow monsterfishkeepers who have been to my house and know i keep monster breeding pairs of cichlids. also sold my last umbee to the same guy who has those big dovii on you tube rampage and chaos he has the umbee on you tube he loves him hes a nice looking fish but he couldnt hand with my dovii male or my black nasty male. festa are nice but why is it people bad talk mayans like they are some kind of weak little cichlids when they are monsters
Got it. I totally understand.

I am a bit up in the air with this, I just recently bought 3 Festae, but I am thinking they might be Mayan Cichlid, What I believe to be the male out of the 3 was showing no bars so I decided to put in the tank with my Flowerhorn to get him barred up. here is the thing..

1. The tail spot is definitely in the top part and near perfectly round and pretty small, which would indicate Festae
2. The second bar doesn't join the 3rd bar to make a "4" or "Y" shape, which would indicate Mayan
3. I count 8 bars , I am mixed in this one because at first I thought mayans have only 7 bars while festae have 9 but after looking throught some google photos I see Mayans with 8 bars, saying that normally the mayan photo's I have seen have very straight bars.

Could someone tell me for sure what I have here, the water is stirred up due to pellets I was feeding and the fish chasing each other so it is a little murky.

thanks for your help, it would be great to get the correct species for these fish.

@duanes
thanks for your input, what made you come to the conclusion it was a Festae? as I don't see the the bars join up to make "Y" or "4" pattern, and I only count 8 bars. I am pleased that it is a Festae but would like to know what you looked at to come to that conclusion

Here are some festae I had, their coloration and barring can vary quite a bit.

and to me mayans although vaguely similar, really are not like festae at all.
below mayans
