Difference between a Red Terror and Mayan Cichlid

i would of kept that mayan, it showed alot more red, then most mayans i seen

I had to haggle with my LFS I bought what I thought was a Jade puffer, only to find it was a ceylon puffer. I only asked for my money back because the ceylon will need full marine when grown. I had to come up with the scientific name of the fish they calmed and the fish I found it to be. They then looked it up and said they will do it this one time, like they where doing me a favor.

I really think there should be a mislabel clause at all locations.

mayan cichlids were being called red terrors long before people where even keeping festa. and in my opinion i like mayans better mine always hold there own better than my festa. i think the festa is another overhyped cichlid wich gets a lot of lies passed around about them becase they have very very nice breeding color. but i havent found them to be bigger or meaner than mayans at all

I've kept them both and Festae are better, hands down! Mayans are beautiful fish but they don't hold a candle to adult Festae. My Mayans were a bit more active than my current Festae but other than that, they don't compare.

you say your festa are better hands down but you didnt give 1 reason why, i say mayans because my mayans grew bigger had larger mouths and ate larger prey items, and where more aggressive than the festa the only one thing my festa ever had over my mayans was there colors and im not that big on color more so behavior. p.s i tried festa one more time and the cuban cichlids i tried to keep them with demolished the festa had to remove them and keep them with oscars. 2 cubans where 2-3 in and 6 festa 3 to 3and a half inches and only on festa lived.

Red Terror is a common name assigned to both festae and uropthalmus. As manager of a LFS, many of my wholesalers call both fish by this name, making it difficult to know what it is that they have. Often times the wholesale rep on the phone has no idea either. It is up to the LFS to find a vendor who sales by scientific name or a knowledgable vendor to know what it is that they are selling. If the store takes a gamble and is uniformed as a staff as to the differences between the two, they can easily be described as red terror or mistaken as a different fish. Remember that just because someone owns a fish store does not mean that they/their staff are completely knowledgeable when it comes to every type of fish.
Responsibility also falls on the consumer. An educated consumer is one who knows what it is their are buying regardless of what someone else may call it.

I saw a real festae (red terror) at a fish store over the weekend and it was labeled as a "true festae." They sale Mayans there as red terrors. If you want the real thing, pay attention to the price. This fish was about three inches and was $30. Mayans of the same size are far less expensive.

While I agree that its the customer that gets screwed if they dont know what they are buying in the end, it is MOST DEFINITELY the stores responsibility to know what they are selling and if they dont know what it is, should find out before selling it or even putting it out on the floor. Its not that hard to google or research what you are selling. I cant think of any other place I do business that mislabels anything ranging from cars, restaurants, clothing stores, shoes, surfboards, guitars, amps etc.

In the end, it only hurts the LFS to not know what they have and to mislabel...they usually lose business that way, at least from me. If your staff doesnt know, teach them or provide them with the tools to know. As a distribution wholesaler, I could NEVER mislabel my product and stay in business, especially in todays online market. There are too many options to go to people who know the stock they sell.

If mislabeling is such an issue from fish distributors, maybe its time to re-think who you (they) buy from. It could only make sales and reputation better from the customer to know exactly what youre getting.

This isnt a personal attack on you Andrew, just my 2 cents about LFS's in general.

i know it will be ok gruff master cause im only on a website talking about fish. i take it your a festa fan im just not a band wagon person festa are very beautifil cichlids but folks are going overboard. mayans are big ruff cichlids that really get after prey and thats what i like. the thing with me is i dont just take peoples word for things i try it my self to see not once but lots of times. its not just festa i also thing umbee are overated. and there are fellow monsterfishkeepers who have been to my house and know i keep monster breeding pairs of cichlids. also sold my last umbee to the same guy who has those big dovii on you tube rampage and chaos he has the umbee on you tube he loves him hes a nice looking fish but he couldnt hand with my dovii male or my black nasty male. festa are nice but why is it people bad talk mayans like they are some kind of weak little cichlids when they are monsters
