I believe what the previous poster was trying to say with that novel he wrote is to use slip bulkhead fittings, with your piece of acrylic tubing in between.

Second novel in print. Thank you. I was having trouble with the words for the fittings. I've just named based on what the function was.

WOW lots of info thanks alot!!!!! All that was every helpful. But do you know where I can get these type of fittings? Also you think the fittings would give it a water tight seal? I did research on the a 4 1/2 inch glass bit and I found one online for 140 bucks!! So i am hoping the glass shops are going to be able to do this. However I did not get a chance to call them today because work was crazy and I had a paper due for my 5pm class. I like the bridge idea. I have never seen anything like that but the air pressure and water every where issue kinda scares me.

Bulkheads with clear acrylic tubing would be your best bet, the bridges are cool but if your water level drops below the tube (IE you don't refill after evaporation) the whole bridge will drain into your tanks...

I think http://www.clearpvcpipe.com has the stuff.. I haven't read that site in a while, so you might have to contact them about bulkheads.

I'm glad I could help. 140 sounds high. I'm sure you'll find a way for your budget to work. Fittings are available at hardware stores. You can usually order them if you talk to the right person. Other than that, the internet has always been my gateway to success for availability, quality, and price.

Update and pics tonight!!! Got everything to do this project!

So after a week or so of doing a lot of research im getting one step closer to making this project happen. I was going to go with acrylic tubes as I mentioned before but I have had a lot of trouble finding the slip bulkheads that size, much less clear ones. so, I called about a gillion glass manufactures quoting me on 4 inch glass tubes. I got estimates ranging from $100 to $500 for two 6 inch sections. Then I called the glass shops around town and asked what tthe biggest hole they could drill in a fish tank and they all said 4 to 4 1/2" hole and i also asked if they could cut the end off of a cylinder vase and some said no and a couple said that they can try but if it broke they were not responsible, but they have done is sucssefullly before. I figured ill give it a shot. Then the hunt started for me to find a 4 inch vase that was at least 6 inches long. Surprisingly I found it on the second place I tried. The vases cost me 3 bucks a piece! So its working out well so far, These vases are cheap enough that I can get a few extras if they break while trying to cut them. I'm just hoping that the glass shop can successfully cut 2 out of about 5 and I will be very happy. If it does work this thing is going to cost me next to nothing to make now! However there is a small problem. I didn't realize it but the two ten gallon tanks I have are different. One of them is about a 1/4 inch taller and wider than the other one and the trim is thicker on the other one. Its not a big deal but it will be noticeable when they are sitting beside each other and its going to really bother me. So my girlfriend has a ten gallon tank and I'm going to go look at it and hopefully it will match one of the ones I have and I will swap them out. But that's about it for now. I wont be able to switch out the tanks or drop off the tanks and vases to get cut till sometime next week because this weekend I am taking a 55 gallon tank that a friend ( he is going to the army and is giving me all of the fish cause he doesn't want to give them to somebody that wont take care for them) gave me with his fish down to my dads house. And me and my dad are going to start building the stand for my 240 gallon tank I got a couple of months ago. The fish from the 55 gallon will be going into the 240 when I get it running along with my fish from my 46 gallon. Anyway, that's about it for now any questions feel free to ask or concerns. Also a suggestions on what I should stock this tank with? Here are some pics of what it is going to look like, the vase's and the tanks. :headbang2

feedback?

You can buy these inter link tanks in the UK. They remind me of those fancy hamster cages. There is one in a LFS that is stocked..... out of curiousity i stood and watched the poor fish in this tank and they did not use the connecting tube.

I pointed this out to a member of staff and they said "they do if they wanna". They proceeded to feed one half of the tank to prove me wrong............ there are now six lil fishys that had no lunch as the staff member was WRONG.

Great idea and looks neat but will it give the fish the best qualtiy of life?

Not sure why this is bad for the fish? Assuming the fish is of appropriate size for a 10g tank it is irrelevant to their "quality of life" if they dont use the tube.

I have some PVC tubes going over the top of the tanks to move water between tanks and actually had to put screens on them just to keep my curious fish from switching tanks on me.
