Quick question, I used 1.25" to make my own overflow. My pump pumps out the water quicker than it can overflow. Is it possible I still have air in the system?

In order to start the syphon, I set it up on top of the aquarium, so the intake was under water, had the wife cover the bottom end that goes into the sump, and I sucked on the top end until her hand got wet. From there, it flowed ok, looked kinda slow.

Should I stick an air line to the check valve and suck while it's under syphon to make sure all the air is out?

I found out what was preventing one of my intakes from working properly, a few days ago i noticed that the resident algae eater (bristlenose) was missing so i check the intake and with a piece of wire pulled his carcass out :(, any way it works alot better, now i will have to make a strainer to prevent that from happening again,

Got a huge problem.

I've got everything built and it works great. Until the power turns off. Then my pump forms a siphon and sucks water out of the tank, into the sump, and overflows my sump. Any help?

Check valve? 1-way valve? It's 3/4" clear tubing. Thanks in advance.
