diy overflow

Actually, no you do not need it as long as all of your plumbing is not all hard plumbed. Mine do not have them. Submerge the overflow in the tank to get the air out and then remove it while it is in the vertical position. If you have three hands, just place one over each of the three holes so the water does not pour out. If you do not have three hands, or no one will lend you an extra one, place a cap over each hole until you get it in place.
That works, but if you have large fish that create tidal waves at the surface while feeding, the "waves" can introduce some more air in the overflow. I had it happen once when my perch went crazy.

and for 2 bucks why not put it in

If the power fails, the level ine tank falls until the siphon is broken by air entering the drain. The 'T' on the outside, combined with the vent stack stops the siphon break before the air can break under the bottom 'U' in the tank. This leaves the over the tank 'U' filled. When the power starts back up and the water enters the top drain again, there is enough suction to clear the air in the drain tube.

I love mine check it out!! http://www.utahaquatics.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=12216#12216
