That's a very creative and simple solution to a very unique problem. You shouldn't have any problem with this on your 55g. At Petsmart you can get suction cups with airline clamps to secure your airline to the side of the tank. I tried the approach of teaching my fish to poop at the surface next to the overflow. Lets just say the results are less than splendid.
