diy overflow

This is what I have found on another project below is picture of the setup of the project.

basically I found two things that a capped vent tube, means faster flow, and I found how to "cap" and "uncap" the vent tube automatically depending on water level. I drilled a hole in the cap, for an airline, just like the one on the U. The vent tube is cap except for the air line which it uses to suck air in, so its actually not fully capped. I then took the other end of the airline and put it 1/2 inch below the water line, so now the vent tube sucks the air out of the airline until its starts to pull water, at which time its fully sealed "capped" When the water drops below the airline the vent tube sucks in air and is now "uncapped"

While my plumbing on this project is not actually a overflow, rather a drain, it may work differently; however I will test this out on my 55 gallon on wed and see if it increase the flow rate. And most importantly passed the on, off, on again power outage test.

That's a very creative and simple solution to a very unique problem. You shouldn't have any problem with this on your 55g. At Petsmart you can get suction cups with airline clamps to secure your airline to the side of the tank. You wouldn't want it to flop out of the tank unexpectedly.

:popcorn:paitently waiting for pics of a bottom draining overflow:naughty:

Has anybody figured out a shure fire way of siphoning off the bottom?

I tried the approach of teaching my fish to poop at the surface next to the overflow. Lets just say the results are less than splendid.

From the intake pipe, add a 90 and then a tee. One end of the tee should point up and the other should point down. Add a pipe to the bottom side to reach to the bottom of the tank.

I'll go take a pic, brb.

clgkag reminded me that I forgot to add that picture. Here it is:

The above modification can be added to any DIY overflow by adding that unnessecary 90 in the original DIY picture and then plugging the mod into it.

Thanks Chompers, that is what I thought you were saying. One last question, does the top of the upright T have to be above or below water level? I am guessing below because when it drains and sticks out, that is what breaks the siphon?

I have been toying with the idea of building a wet/dry sump. i didnt like the price of hob style overflows. i really like this design. Sorry if this question has already been asked but how do u size a return pump for your overflows. I have a 125 and will be putting 1 -1/14 overflow in each corner

Hey i was needing to know if i could use anytype of waterpump for the sump. and is there a way to change a power head with i think a 40gph in to a pump so that it pumps the water out of the sump and in to the tank
