hi chompers. been browsing through one of the overflow threads and i saw a modification of your overflow with added underflow. i was just wondering if i could eliminate the t inside and change it to a 90 for a full underflow. will this work? thanks i borrowed peds82 and modified it a bit.

You don't need the hole in the elbow in the tank since the T-junction outside the tank acts as the siphon break.

Other than that, it should work fine.

i'm assuming it would have a lower flow than the usual overflow which i will try to compensate by using bigger diameter pvc. do you think it would have any problems during a power outtage?

It should have a pretty decent flow rate, but if I was you, I'd use the horizontal flow rate chart to calculate pipe diameter just to be on the safe side.

You shouldn't have any problems in a power outage provided your sump can handle the extra water when the tank water level goes down to the bottom of the bulkhead.

Sup fellas!? I'm new to mfk and I was looking over this thread before I joined. I atempted to make one of these pipe overflows for my 150 g and I used 1.5 PVC. I hooked up a pump that pushes around 400-50o gals. She works good for the first 15 minutes but then I see bubles coming from return(sump is running out of water) then as the tank fills higher, the pressure starts pushing hard and she startS running fine. The process starts over again. I noticed that when the bubles are coming from return, the overflow builds air pocket and isn't pushing as much, but wen water level rises a
lil, air pocket releases, until the process replays. Any input? Thanks a bunch.

We need more info to help pinpoint your problem. What pump are you using for the return? Distance from pump to top of tank? Pics of your overflow design would be extremely helpful.
