diy overflow

Check the connections on your pipes and where your check valve connects to the overflow. Air must be leaking in.

i think if you dont have a hole inside it'll drain the whole tank during power outages no?
Are you thinking about the return piping or the overflow?

If the vent tube on the overflow isn't installed, the 'overflow' just becomes a siphon. Not only will it keep draining while the pump is off, but even when it's on it will not be self-regulating like a proper overflow and it will either drain water too fast or too slow.

If you don't have a hole drilled just below the water line on your return piping (from the sump to the tank), the return piping will act as a siphon as soon as the pump is turned off. It will drain the tank until it sucks air in. If your return pipe goes 80% of the way down into the tank, it will drain 80% of your water.

sorry to revive this thread but.

does anyone have the example by Volenti in post #292.

it is not loading for me.

Don't know what's the biggest pipe used so far (didn't read the whole thread), but last weekend I did a 1.5" pipe and its not enough............not even 1/3 of my water flow. So I decided to add another one .... 2" pipe this time, and it worked great! I don't even put that check valve for primming. I sink the whole overflow into the tank ... turn it around to flush out all air then just lift it up and hang it. No dringking of fish water!!!

never mind.. i left the system running for a week and she is working ok... i say ok because eventually the overflow loses its syphon..

do you have a check valve on your overflow?
is everything sealed right?

a properly built overflow wont lose its prime, even in a power outage. its probably just some small factor that got overlooked, and is easy to fix.

you might wanna look at the date there bitter.. attack of the necromancer.. holy thread ressurection

Well, since you would like to be rude about it rather than enjoy the flub up I suppose I'll clarify for you. The question you were addressing happened September 1st. The thread was dead until it got ressurected by the post from yesterday. So, if you'd like to continue to show your ass you are more than welcome to. Thanks for the rude reply.
