Filamentosum vs. Caprapretum

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what an awesome looking fish!!!!! I think we've found the first brachyplastoma hybrid platyneum x filamentosum/capapretum? This can't be a color morph (like the flash zebra) can it? I don't think there are any physical differences aside from the obvious one at least that I can see

The only thing I am certain of is that it is not what is in the title. :) Definitely brachyplatystoma either fila, or capapretum. I doubt a hybrid though. These fish are nearly impossible to breed in captivity. :) They are migratory species that must make the longest migrations of any fresh water fish in the world to spawn.

I'd love to see comparison pics from the member jools speaks of. There is variance even within a species so I hesitate to describe two species based off of one person's experience with two fish which need to be verified. Not saying he's wrong just saying I personally don't feel comfortable with it until it's verified visually and even then I would probably not feel comfortable until dozens more are show to have the same differences.

Have you been hinting that I should continue asking Jools and Co on the PCF thread or will you do it? Two members are a twice stronger motivator but maybe you have your own thoughts and plans...

I love planetcatfish, but have not always had the greatest reception there. This is the reason that I rarely post on there. I do search their site and look into the threads, but I may be a little extreme for them I guess lol. Several members on there are quick to judge and not willing to help. I will give it a shot though. :) I am very open minded when it comes to this stuff, but basing a description for a major site identifying catfish species seems a little iffy at best. It may be the best they have come across yet, but since I have found out that lundberg is the one to split the species I am waiting on a reply. I could just fork out the money to access his report myself, but this can get expensive, and I am sure that PC already has this document for their records. If I had the money I would gladly buy up all of the scientific papers on catfish, but that would get expensive at 25-40 bucks a pop. Dr. Lundberg was kind enough to let me view some of his more interesting docs, and I am grateful for that. I am not sure weather or not I have worn out my welcome at this point. I have debated many things catfish with him over the last few years lol. Of course he is almost always right. I am but a mere novice in comparison to soo many years/decades experience directly in the field of catfish. I wish I could convince him to join PC or MFK, but I don't feel he has time for it with all his current projects. I wait patiently lol. I will take a walk over to PC and see what jools has to say though. :)

Right. I should have thought of that. You are not a little extreme for many. You are a ticking nuclear bomb that some, I imagine, would think they must disarm asap at all costs :) Well, people need to learn to accept differences and if they cannot, they need to learn to stay away and mind their own business and let others, who are accepting, have their day in the sun. Of course, it may prove prudent to not provoke some of the "activists" by disclosing how you plan to hybridize lots of catfish. Not because that'd be wrong in your eyes (have to be true to yourself) but because there is such a useful thing as tact and diplomacy.

This has caught my attention. Would you bet on this, and do you know any specific numbers? Because I would rather say Acipenser Sp. migrate further.

X2 on the less than great reception. It seems like a good site but people are quick to jump you for any post that doesn't fit their ideals.

I have posted there about filamentosum. :) hopefully we will get some things cleared up. As for the hybrids that is years in the future and no mystery to anyone. Hopefully we can learn much from the ones I choose to hybridize. If not it will be a fun endeavor. it may not work at all, but that's the nature of such things. i am liking the fact that one of my sun cats is probably female though. Even after days of not feeding her abdomen is distended. the other has a flat belly until feeding. Possible male and female.

*Go S. Vettel #1 RBR! 3 BACK TO BACK WDC AND CONSTRUCTERS!

I do have specific numbers and the study that states that it is the longest freshwater migratory species on the planet. Note I said freshwater. If it migrates to salt this doesn't count. :) but I will look up the numbers I have to dig it up right quick lol.

This link may help. Apparently I may have worded it wrong. It is the longest reproductive migration for freshwater fish species on the planet covering 2200 kilometers. or 1367 miles.
Note: there are several brachyplatystoma species with similar migrations. This sites just one of those species. I did just a quick search and for freshwater I couldn't find sturgeon migrations more than 1000 km. Feel free to post a link telling otherwise for purely freshwater migration. :)
