hey, ive got 5 blue gills in with my turtles. i had to 3in turtles and 5 2in blue gills in a 20 gallon tank until 3 days ago. now i have a six foot long tank with a DIY sump.

BTW in case the owner of the thread is reading this..... I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS THREAD. i would be doing the same build if i had $$$ and if i wasn't 12!

Filtration is still unworked on - I've been very busy, and I don't have any spare cash right now to buy the pumps I want to use so it is what it is.

Several more feeders died from unknown causes. They were all in very bad shape all of a sudden, and I don't know why. I added a heater, turned on the filtration pump, and tossed some prime in the water, and the die-off stopped. My ammonia kit read zero, but the water smelled like ammonia so I dunno what gives. The water temp got down to 58F with no heater, but that oughtn't kill a goldfish I don't think. I also hadn't fed them in about a week, so maybe they were starving.

The important thing is they stopped dying so I'm pretty sure it's not something about the tank itself that was killing them.

As for a hood - no way. I'd like to, but it would be so massive and cumbersome I just dont' want to deal with it. My plan is to build 4 2'x4' frames from 1x4 or so and put greenhouse roofing in them, then hinge them together into 2 pairs, so I can lift up and fold back a 2x4' section of the top for maintenance or feeding. Cheap and simple and effective is the name of the game!

For lights I will probably get 3-6 CF floodlights and put them in light pots sitting on the clear top. That way I can turn them on independently, move them around, blah blah blah. They are also pretty cheap, and provide point source light and a nice ripple effect.

In other news, I have a single 250W stealth heater in there right now and it's raised the tank temperature from 58 to 65 so far after a couple of days (and it's climbing still). I find this fairly amazing since there is no lid on the tank and the garage is quite cool. It gives me some hope that 3-4 heaters will be able to maintain 75 degrees with a lid over the tank.

Just read the WHOLE thread after reading your WHOLE tread on the 185 gallon plywood build on Aquariacentral.

Amazing builds. Sorry to see Buddy and Walter die. Felt like I was reading a drama novel after the first hour or two.

Registered on both sites for various information and your threads. Simply amazing.

I'd love to do a nice large tank. I have a wood shop and fiberglass experience so your builds have been a great learning experience.

LOL that's a lot of reading! I think you'll find there are a lot of threads on this forum worthy of full on read throughs - lots of folks with different ideas, all of which seem to have some degree of success. Thanks for the compliments, and it's always nice to know I've inspired someone!

Tank is holding at 70F with a single 250W stealth heater. It's 56F in my garage for now, but the temperature outside is falling. It was around 0F this morning, and it should reach -40 in the next couple months.

I bought some lumber to make the frames for my lids this weekend, but it STINKS. I spent like 5 minutes looking around my shop for the dog-poo but it's the lumber. I dunno what's up with that. I'll use it anyway, the paint I'll use on it ought to seal in any smell it still has after it has a chance to dry

The tank looks cool.

Too bad you're giving up on a hood if you want one. What if you used something super light as just a hood skirt, with the lights suspended in the middle? I'm thinking of something like that light weight corrugated plastic like they use for those USMail tubs? Its sturdy, rigid and super light weight and moisture resistant.
