Finally Upgrading: 600gl Plywood build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great deal on those titanium heaters. I have five 250W stealth heaters - but only one of them is in this tank at the moment. I think three should do the trick. I like low watt heaters (if 250 can be considered low watt) because the cords don't get warm, they won't burn the fish if they touch them, and they won't overheat the tank if one of them malfunctions (had this happen once).

I started cutting lumber for the lid structures today. Should have frames assembled by tomorrow and the greenhouse roofing material after xmas. I'm ready to throw the catfish in there now, but with all that's going on over the next few weeks, I'd rather keep him in a stable environment till I'm available to pay close attention to his environment.

Alright, been dragging my feet. Christmas and whatnot. The tank is still running happily with 15 or so feeders in it, all doing well. It's holding 72F with a single 300W heater and a tarp over the top so I imagine it will do even better with proper lids. We had a cold snap down to -43 just before christmas, and it didn't affect the tank temperature much (garage got down to 50F or so). This weekend my plan is to do a massive water change, refilling with warmer water, and move my heaters, filter and fish over from the 200gl tub I've been using now. I'm not certain how I'm going to wrangle this fish yet without hurting him, but hopefully he doesn't hate me for too long afterwards!

Thats gonna be 1 happy fish!

Can you just siphon out all but the last few gallons and dump him in? How heavy is the tub?

The tub is about 3 feet bt 5 feet by 2 feet, and quite heavy, maybe 100lbs. It would be pretty difficult to lift up even with no water in it. I could try to get him to swim into a smaller bin and lift him out that way, but I doubt the risk to his fins would be reduced any. I have a pillowcase I used to move him from his transport tub to where he is now, but any handling of fish this size is a bit risky, no matter what you do, really.

Sometimes I can spend a ton of time procrastinating, plotting, scheming, planning and never actually do anything.

Usually I have to make myself just go do it..
