would kanamycin ( Im thinking with the "ycin" ending, most likely not) and nitrofurazone still be drugs available to aquarists directly??
I think we are going to have to wait and see how this all plays out. Some meds are going to be available, and some may or may not. Some of this may even depend on the vendors themselves. In one of the previous links where the FDA was mentioned there was already some talk among the big box stores about dropping antibiotics due to Americans buying them, and self medicating due to the cost of visiting a doctor. (without insurance) I was actually wondering the same thing about Kanamycin as I don't see it on the list, but that list could have already been amended. I'm not sure.

I can see, with the exorbitant cost of medical care/drugs in this country the desperation of some individuals looking to alternative means to medicate themselves when ill. Of course it is dangerous and ill-conceived, but--- given the circumstances.

This an older paper, but this disease is still making its rounds in North America, including the Province where I live, so I'm guessing this will rule out Kanamycin based products as well.

I would imagine that black market fish meds will continue to enter Canada for years to come. Once the stores clear their shelves, the rest will be up to Border Patrol agents.

It appears that kanamycin, an aminoglycoside, is in the same class of drugs as Streptomycin and neomycin ( which are included in the list). Kanamycin is not frequently used in livestock and humans because of its side-effects ( primarily danger to fetus in pregnancy and poses danger to hearing); but, there are some particular applications in humans in combination with other drugs ( works synergistically much ;like it does with nitrofurazone in cases of columnaris) that make it very effective for such ailments as endocarditis.

I also found nitrofurazone on the list after some searching. So, that will definitely be by prescription only.

Now that the Bob & Doug McKenzie show is over, I just thought I would add a quick update.

I popped into the local Petland today and all of the various drugs that they stocked in the past, including various antibiotics, are still on the shelf. Not sure what to make of that, but clearly not all of the stores in Canada have pulled all antibiotics from their shelves. At least not yet …...
