flakes or pellets

Joe - no one here said that it can't be done. My wife has been driving for over 30 years, that doesn't make her a great driver. :)

This is hilarious! A good analogy too. :)

Pellet food simply allows for more efficient delivery of nutrients to a fish for several different reasons many people here already mentioned. Flake food will still work. Just not as well. Your fish won't grow as quickly as pellet fed fish and/or you will need more flake food than pellet food to delivery the exact same amount of nutrients.

I am also interested in this...my fish seem to eat pellets as a last resort.

I give them 50:50 tetracolor floating pellets, and tetracolor granules.

They really prefer tetracolor granules.

Is there anything wrong with feeding then the tetracolor granules over the pellets?

There is nothing wrong with it at all. Many people (like Joe) swear by flakes (I may be wrong, but I think that is what you mean by granules) and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Flakes are just a less efficient way of delivering the necessary nutrients your fish require.

More efficient way to deliver the food. LOL! Anybody ever see pellet particles coming out of a fish's gill? Ever see flakes come out of a fish's gill?

Less efficient means that flakes contain less nutrients and therefore you pay a similar amount of money for less nutrition. The problem with flakes and also sticks is the amount of air they contain.

I have seen that but it's because the pellets were too big. I switched to smaller pellets and never had that problem again, and that was a messy oscar. Flakes are easy to feed because they are a one size fits all kind of food. If the right sized pellets are fed, there is no comparison between the two.

Hi,

No,I have never fed flakes at all, the brand "Tetra" have flakes, floating pellets, sinking pellets, and slow sinking granules.

I have tetra color enhancing floating pellets and slow sinking granules.

When I feed the fish go nuts for the granules and only eat the pellets as a last resort.

Thanks

Okay. Are the granules smaller than the pellets? If so, are the pellets about the same size or larger than the fish's mouthes? If that is the case, they may prefer the smaller size as they can swallow more in a shorter amount of time.

How long have you fed the pellets along with the granules? If you have recently started feeding pellets, they may be slow to take to a new food they haven't eaten before in the presence of a food they know.

It could also be something of taste. I have never experienced this as all my fish eat everything with gusto, but I have heard of fish being a lot like dogs in that they tend to love food that is bad for them. If you offer a dog Purina versus Blue Buffalo (BB is better), you will often see dogs eating Purina. It's similar to people and junk food. LOL I have no proof or evidence of this, just some things I have read before.

Beyond these possible reasons, I can't think of any other explanation. I don't know quite as much about fish foods as some of the other folks here, so they might be able to shed more light on the reason for you.

granules = crumbles, which also tend to leach nutrients rather quickly due to their design.
