Your doin' some pretty interesting Dr. Frankenstien stuff experimenting with Probiotics. From what I understand of inorganic carbon dosing the results won't really
show til a month, month and a half, and have no ill effects on the fish. All in all it's still the growing of bacteria that's eliminating the phosphates and nitrates.
Me personnally I like the old tried and true method - go slow and allow these colonies to grow in time and as needed. Although I'm way behind you in every aspect of Reefing, it's nice to know their are other options available for future growth within the hobby - Thanks for your documentation.
I'm assuming Ich in a marine enviorment is still Ich - fluxuation in salinty to kill off the offspring, higher temps to speed up the adults metabolism and ultimately their life. Increase in o2 to compenstate for lower levels of dissolved o2 due to higher temps.
Pretty sure you knew all that - best of luck.
The thing that keeps me active in reefing is that there is almost always something else to try. In addition to that, there is almost always a way to tinker with it, or adapt it in a unique way that suits you and your tank.
I am assuming that had h2o testing occurred yesterday that water parameters would have been better than they usually are. It makes sense that if a skimmer is pulling more stuff out, there will be less in the tank to negatively affect h2o quality. Although I have heard the same thing, you wait about a month to see real results.
Although it doesnt directly negatively effect the fish, something definitely changed in my tank. There was no reason for perfectly healthy fish to come down violently with ich in that short of a time period. I have never in almost 9 years of reefing seen anything like this.
You dont know what bacteria you are promoting, and an increased count in the water in my mind could definitely stress a fish.
I also noticed that after dosing vodka that my gravel siphon water was coming out black instead of the usual brown. Different stuff living down in there.
To be entirely honest, I am pretty much an old school reefer as well. Slow and steady wins the race with most of my colonies, but I am looking into doing kalk at a later period, like once I finally start adding corals.
Salinity was dropped in my DT to attempt to kill off any young that are just hatching now to avoid infecting any other fish.
All fish in QT are swimming around as of this morning, and I have cupramine in the mail along with a copper test kit.
Salinity in QT is 1.019 to 1.020 and temperature I aimed for (unconfirmed) was low 80's.
