Florida Gar with cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I definitely do not recommend that combination for 5 reasons:

  1. Gars are illegal to own in CA.
  2. Gars are illegal to own in CA.
  3. Gars are illegal to own in CA.
  4. Gars are illegal to own in CA.
  5. Gars are illegal to own in CA.

k im not getting a gar besides i dont have $50 anymore i spent it on some cubans and dovii but now i wonder if it would have worked do u think a 6-8 inch gar would have worked :cry::cry:

yeah i figured that the gar would eat them

NO GAR WITH CICHLIDS. why can u people not understand this?? this WILL result in a dead/blind/broken back gar. Or dead/eattin cichlids. period get that through your head.

^^ okay no need for attitude and search this thread to see if someone told me what u just said because i did not realize my cichlids would kill my gar they said mean aggressive and mine are small and nice and they would have been raised together

That's just Lep for you. :grinno:

For some odd reason, many threads arise on a regular basis about keeping gars with cichlids or people post about keeping them together; they get kind of old after the first few especially after people go and try the combination anyway and come back to say that it failed miserably, that's all.

A little broad there...you saying gar won't be okay with big discus, festivums, oscars, bay snook, peacock bass, etc? Tank size has a lot to do with it as well.

I have a Florida that has, for the last 10 years, lived with a variety of cichlids. He's neither blind, broken-backed or dead.

a 6" garr could be with 2"-3" cichlids because a 6" garr is like the size of a cigar the 3" would be safer.
a 6" garr is pretty small. when they are 3" they look like a cigarette.

i have 4 spotted garrs in my 400 gallon comunity tank.
2 are 13"- 14" and 2 are 18"+ and have lived thier whole lives with cichlids.
currently they are with 1 6" male loisellie, 1 9" female jaguar, 4 amps 10"-12", 3 catfish 14"-26", 6 polypterus 12"+, and 2 plecos 10" & 14".

as for skitishness i scared one of the garrs out of the tank netting a peacock bass that left a while back. didn't both the garr, it was eating later that day.

just know they are gonna grow to 40"+ one day.
