The original place you had for your location is an area where true gars are illegal.

That's what I meant. I was trying to avoid blatantly saying though because I was starting to feel like a troll of sorts when it comes to this whole gar legality thing, but I guess someone needs to let people know when they have illegal fish.

After reading all 4 pages of this thread I feel like some people forgot to tell you some really important stuff...
for 1 Gars are illegal in CA
and for 2 it would probably end up blind/dead/broken back.

Your rule is too broad though. Gar with peaceful cichlids is quite different from keeping gar with a tank full of Red Devils. Gar with Mbuna will likely end up with eaten cichlids, etc...depends on what species, tank size, fish size...

Gar noobs need easy consise answers which is gar plus cichlids is a no. when u get experience u can try other combos.

I don't think new gar keepers are somehow dumber than other noob fishkeepers. I'd rephrase it as "Gar + aggressive cichlids = bad news"

hahahaha. perhaps we should come up with similar symbols as "short answers" to all the popular questions that are generally (and easily) already answered in pinned topics and other threads...

= "your gar is a Florida gar"

= "gars are illegal in CA/don't post about your illegal gar"

= "this is how you get your gars off live food"

= "this is how big your gar will get and this is its growth rate"

= "OMG you're gonna need a 1,000,000 gallon tank for that gator gar!"
