I've not used or seen, so cannot say. But I would say they're bound to use some good ones as a tank builder? I would use what they provide unless you see something that worry you.

Thanks for asking; It will be 1 year since I've had it on Jan 8th. I got it at 4". I did have one before that snapped at my acrylic bracket and his mouth got infected - I operated and he didn't make it. I've since redesigned that issue.
Atom II is at least 16" now.

If you do add strainers (and I have) you "must check them every day if there are plants etc, its very easy for strainers to get plugged and overflow.
Even with strainers, I used long handle brushes to regularly scrub out pipes. It doesn't take much to have detritus collect in the pipe bends with a few errant snail eggs or the MTS young, and there is a blockage. I also brush out influent pipes regularly with those brushes, especially 1/2" PVC.
