It's day 3 and I've got wrigglers. It looks like the little pot they are in is vibrating. This would be my first spawn, so I am a little nervous. Does anyone have any suggestions as to when I should move my fish from the main tank to the brood tank? I am thinking after the yolks are absorbed... right when they become free swimmers. And should I move just the mom or both?

I have never bred those species before but my breeding jags I leave the babies and the parents together the whole time. The babies are removed at about 1 " and then I give them away.

UPDATE: The 250-350 fry are 12 days old (including egg time). I moved the babies and mom when they were still wrigglers to a smaller brood tank. It's an over-filtrated 15 gallon. But I am getting a 56 cube for grow out this weekend. I moved some of my fish around and freed up a tank for mommy and daddy to be alone. But now I am afraid that putting the FH in with the Texas could result in mommy kicking daddy's butt. The babies are eating and foraging very well. I've been putting fake plants from my other tanks in with them so that they can pick off the algae since they seem to love it in between feedings. I covered the filter intakes with a sponge which stopped them from being sucked in. And all the food that gets stuck in the sponge is helping them grow really fast. They have quadrupled in size since becoming free swimmers. I am not feeding bbs, but a huge variety of other foods... ground bloodworms, soft pellets with krill, shrimp pellets, mealworms cut up (they hollow them out), Hikari 1st bites, micro pellets, and cichlid gold. I make a mix and they can't resist. I will post some more pics as they progress.

wow i just saw FHxTexas juveniles at a petstore yesterday. Congrats!

As I promised, some pics of my little fry and their grow-out tank. They're still getting bigger every day. The pics aren't as nice as I like them to be but you get the idea... They're not much to look at now but in a few short months I expect some coloring to appear on these little guys.

The 56 is still cloudy, still cycling... but I threw a few plecos and fry in there just to help it out.

my male flowerhorn mated with my female salvini. the size different obviously didnt matter. they bred numerous times, until the FH killed the female after one breeding session when she wouldnt let him eat the eggs.lol

My pair is alone in another tank. All the babies were separated to keep a murder from occurring. I love my little texas, but mommy FH could kick his butt up and down the tank if she wanted to. She is a spunky little fish.

what substrate did you use in your tanks and where can i get some?????!?!!!?!

My larger tanks have pool filter sand from my local pool store. I added on top of that larger river rock from home depot. Make sure you rinse the sand out in a 5 gallon bucket until the water running off is clear. Just keep stirring it and tilting the bucket to allow the water to drain better. This is really a 2 person task. I looks great and cichlids love it. ;)

Here are some blurry pics... the damn things won't sit still.
