Labeled South American Gar, as I understand it this isn't a true Gar. If it is a "South American Gar" does anyone know the actual name? I would like to get some more info on this fish but can't find anything for "South American Gar", please and thanks.

I believe that someone posted a similar fish in another recent thread; I think that we decided that it was some sort of characin. Luckily for you, this is definitely not a true gar.

True gars are illegal in California. I'm pretty sure that most, if not all, false gars such as the one you have are legal; I'd have to check the illegal fish thread to be 100% sure.

Ok I think I found the thread. Ya I was told they're illegal here, I got this knowing it wasn't actually a gar. I just hoped someone here could point me in the right direction and you have. Much thanks man.
