Technically is it true... Then again, depending on how big he gets him at first and if he's gonna have him for a long time in a grow out tank or get rid of him when he does growout of whatever he has currently.

nope, not really.

A 210 is fine depending on the dimensions. A 180 is what is usually recommended for Florida gars, but the gar will definitely appreciate the extra space.

yup.

Kyle I think it's great that you're trying to help but if I recall correctly last week you told two separate people that their spotted pike characin's were 'definitely' Florida gars, that they looked just like yours, etc... no worries - when I first started here I actually posted a pic of a characin too thinking it was a gar... but I also wasn't answering questions about gar keeping at that point, I was researching and learning and getting questions answered myself. The surety with which you wrongly answer questions might mislead a beginner looking for help.

What does this have to do with dimensions of how big of a tank he's gonna need? .....It's a GAR :nilly:
And i do not remember ID-ing and "pike characins" if I recall...
I only post my opinion towards something i know what it is. Gar's are really hard to mislead since there is soooo many different fish out there...

#1 the dude was talking about 2000 gallons, and that is obviously PLENTY...
#2 I used to have a gar...
soo..... where is this leading again.....

look at the context of the thread - madding is correct, you were way off both times. follow what he suggested in terms of learning/reading first, THEN giving answers/instructions to others. we are all learning here, but having consistently incorrect info won't help anyone--

so by hundreds of gallons, i'd assume 210 is too small then, correct? Oh, the fish is around 15" long. she said a customer brought it in, as well as this massive pacu. Felt bad for the pacu, it was in bad shape.

While what MFK probably needs is a "Reputation System" (to clearly identify experts), but the closest substitute is the count of total posts you see next to each user..For instance, my "total" is in the early 400's, you are in the 280's.. While Solomon (E_Americanus), Alex (Xander), Michael (Madding) and others are in the thousands...

This implies, I am a newbie and these guys are the veterans.. So, if I (or some other newbie like me) expresses an opinion which is contrary to what the veterans say.. go with the veterans' opinions and not the newbie's!

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck with that great looking Florida gar.

I see no one actually bothered to ID this:
Boulengerella lateristriga.... Cool fish and was just drooling over some today. To bad I have no room for them though.

yeah, those were really tempting...as was that other species with the lure on the snout! maybe someday when we don't have as many gars to keep track of...like when we're dead :irked:/:D
