Pretty much nobody in Hawaii will eat tilapia. They have a bad reputation here because they thrive in a sewage canal on the outskirts of Waikiki. Sure, restaurants don't use the mutated ones from the canal, but still.

I noticed my GG has been taking more gulps of air as of lately: at least 3x in a minute on average. In the past he was able to go longer without trips to the top of the tank. Should I be concerned? The temperature is around 75 degrees, the water conditions are optimal (no measurable ammonia), I have good filtration and do water changes 1-2x a week. He has become more shy. My LMB tries to intimidate him by following him around, but the GG still nips at him when he gets too close.

surface air isn't the only source of air for gouramis. it's just in addition to what they get from standard fishy water-through-the-gills type breathing. i don't think it's a problem, he might just be seeing things on the surface.

Hey
It sounds like there's a lower amount of dissolved oxygen in your water, which would make me worry for your LMB, which is a fish that needs high oxygen content. But as for the gourami, he's fine.

yeah LMB's are colderwater fish and cold water usually has more O2 in it than warm water, when he starts going to the surface then i'd be worried

I have four air stones running, plus a powerhead aerating the water. The LMB is not coming to the surface to breathe at all. Thanks for the advice.
