GIANT gouramis

Piggy67 - You have a RTGG that is 26-27"? I thought your gourami was an O. Goramy which would be much a bigger fish, right? Once he reached 11"-12", his growth rate really slowed down. He hasn't grown in the last 5 years or so. Maybe age is catching up to him, who knows. It certainly has not been for lack of food or space. He has been in a 150gal for 14 years, pretty much by himself (does not play well with others). Yes about the bubbles. Sometimes he will randomly let out air wherever he is and swim to the top to replenish. He has been doing this as far back as I can remember. Not often, but enough not to be a surprise.
Yanbbrox- I will try to get a better pic this weekend. Can't really say about head to body ratio, but now that you mentioned it , does seem odd. I have had him since he was 3"-4". Badly beat up, but once he got some pounds on , he was doing the beating up (pay-back I guess). He stayed in a 60 gal for a nano second before going to the 150gl where he is now. He grew very quickly to 12" and then everything came to a screeching halt, growth-wise. He's always been healthy and has a bottomless stomach. I am assuming that he is not going to get any bigger. Maybe he is something else and not a RTGG and that is as big as they get. Don't know. The shape of his pectorals are as you see them. They grew curved straight up, so there is very little fin to swim with. Same on both sides. All the other fins grew back normal but those. I am just glad I was able to get him out of that green terror tank in the LFS. He would have died if he stayed in there much longer.
No, my GG is goramy not Lacti...and the lacti dont grow as large or as fast but your RTGG should be much bigger by all accounts. You have done a wonderful job raising your gg...koodos to you. Not saying theres anything wrong with your GG, just he seems different than most gg's on the web. I would be very interested if he was a different species of Osphronemus than what i have seen in my many years and he looks to be IMHO...

Yanbrox is a much more knowledgable GG keeper than i...maybe he has a few ideas as to this wonderful fish's identity...

Dion....

Waiting for tequila to chim in as well..very knowledgeable member of MFK..

I am going to dig through my old photos and try to find one when he was a tiny guy. When he was small, he was more one the light orange/grayish color, rather than the silver/grayish that I have seen juv. RTGG to be. When he got bigger, his colors deepened to the more red he is now. Hopefully this info helps someone in ID. I have a lot of photos to go through so it may take awhile (I was a little behind in the digital camera dept. back then :shakehead). - Rudy

Ah... master T:nilly:

What is it that I'm supposed to be chimming in on, a new and more tastier GG perhaps?

It is indeed. It is my GG that I have had for 15 years. Have not seen its coloration before, anywhere. Always thought it was a wild caught RTGG. But comparing to real RTGG seems less likely. It has the MFK community stumped, so they have summoned your vast and infinite knowledge to shed some light on the situation. ummm, Oh Great One? :headbang2 ( ok, I am new here, so I am not sure if I am suppose to kneel, or kiss your ring or something):j/k: But any info you can share would be most helpful. All info and history and pic are posted a few pages back by me with the subsequent analysis by others. Many thanks.

This could be fun

Just a little random update.

We are now on Veg, finally. I'm sure it didn't take George this long to switch on to fruit and veg, it's been costing me a fortune keeping her in frozen food blocks. She was looking for food after a feed so the wife said we'll try her on veg, all that was to hand was spinach but it went down well, then we found some cucumber and that went down as well.

It'll be great to get back to shopping fin the 'just about to go off section' at the supermarket, a whole lettuce with one day left on it for 10p, saved me a huge amount on feeding George.

She's lost a few scales on her side for some reason, probably scrapping with the other fish so I'm going to run a treatment through the tank just in case.

I hate taken baby GG photos they just won't keep still:

Trying to get a good shot of the red in her fins:

Big day on Wednesday, got a guy to come up and draw the plans for the house extension, if all goes well I can start planning the proper big tank.
