gotta love how much lighter acrylic is and how much stronger it is once you bump something into a glass tank and shatter it you''ll see why people buy acrylic but then again the hole scratch thing is a pain i love being able to use a razor blade on my tanks can't go near an acrylic tank with a razor blade

I've been told that you can get some kind of film or something to put over acrylic to prevent it from scratching so eazily anybody else heard of this ?
acrylic isnt alkl that stronger and once u bump a paice of acrylic it is scratched a peice of 12mm glass is less shock proof but more flex proof.

I gotta say just a couple of things about this subject. I like glass tanks but like others I have had them shatter even without any visible signs of breakage. Also, once your 150 gallon tank (as in mine..sniff..sniff..) leaks it just plain sucks ass. It also weighed like a bastard too and is not impervious to scratches. Acrylic on the other hand might show some but is way lighter and tough as hell. I once chucked an empty acrylic tank against the wall once and filled it up twice some time afterwards outside and it still held water and still does. For me any new tanks 75 gallons and up are acrylic. My 2 cents.

There is a lot of good education information on this thread. After reading all 17 pages of this thread I've learned a lot about acrylic and glass tanks that I didn't know about before. Based of what I'm seeing repeatly is that most people prefer acrylic with bigger tanks for stability and weight issues and most prefer glass with smaller tanks due to cost and less prone to scratch. This is where I stand on the topic. I am one of those that hated the look of a silicone between the glass seam on a rectangular tank. I was pretty close to getting an acrylic tank for $650 by TruVu until I found Jebo made rounded corner glass tank. I did some research online and was fortunate enough that Jebo distributor warehouse was located within 10miles from my house. I went to the warehouse and asked about purchasing direct from them and they were willing to sell to me. So here is a pic of my glass tank with rounded corners for those that have never seen a rounded corner glass tank. It's still bare because I'm not done with aquascape yet. For more pics of other Jebo tanks you can find it here. http://www.aquareal.org/Galery/jebo.html

T1, you have a great looking tank. You're so careful with your tanks that whether it's glass or acrylic I can tell your strive to keep it 110% crystal clear. Please post a picture of the top of the acrylic tank. I want to see how is this tank top brace is different from the one we get in the US. BTW, I live in the US so our choices for acrylic tanks are limited to what's available. I'm sure those better brand acrylic can be had or order in the US but not too many consumers are willing to drop $2000-$3000 US currency on a 100+ gallon setup.

Berserker, I have great respect for you to keeping your kids in check with your tank and at the fish stores. One of my pet peeve is seeing kids at aquarium stores out of control. I hate it when my nieces and nephew tap on the glass and make the fish goes berserk.

bro, u know what, jebo is a brand from my country, their tanks are among the cheapest tanks in china..I am not saying they are bad, but not good enough:screwy:,
and i have to mention that, plz dont use those round corner tank if possible, because after been heated and bent to that shape, the glass would be vulnerable internally. the tank is just like a timed bomb..maybe i am a little exaggerating, but plz take care;)

and imo, glass would be better in many aspects, i'd use acrylic only if i dont have another choice(like buiding a 20000g, unluckily/luckily i didnt have a chance to own that big tank though...), i have seen 3000g tank with cement and glass in china, it's from a aro fan. I really dont think glass is that unreliable as some people said.

btw: this is the 3000g with 9 aros totally in it and there is a platinum siver among them, we love the number "9" in china.;)

If they were the same thickness acrylic is ALOT stronger then glass. Glass isn't flexible at all if you try to bend a piece of glass it will crack or shatter, acrylic will bend but will turn wight and will be less strong as a result .

glass vs acrylic IS a no brainer. ACRYLIC ALL THE WAY! if you ever see an acrylic tank, you'll know it! lighting looks way brighter and is more efficient and effective and as for the scratches? thats what makes it a no brainer! once a glass tank is scratched, its scratched for life. when acrylic tanks get scratched, you get the scratch repair kit, a series of buffing pads that get progresively smoother. you dont even have to drain the water, do it with the water AND fish still in the tank. it is verry simple. dont let the fear of the unknown deter you from looking at the superior material, ACRYLIC. can you repair scratches on a glass tank? not likely, nuff said... brighter, clearer, and easily repairable. i dont even own an acrylic but my next over 120 WILL BE ACRYLIC. because it is the superior material!:headbang2

What products do you use to remove scratches from an acrylic tank? I've got a porter cable and some pads that i use on my car. Would that stuff work?

:) Hi guys I'm new in the tank of monster fishkeepers.
I agree, acrylic is about 1/3 lighter than glass yes it scratch very easy but is better to use in a big set up. The other advantage is that acrylic doesn't distort as much as glass.

Six of one half adozen of the other! They both have their good and bad points. Just get the best of either you can afford and realize you'll have to deal with their faults. To me, acrylic is probably better for large tanks and glass definitely more affordable for smaller tanks.
