The highest quality optical medium for viewing is proven every time the Keck, Gemini, or Hubble telescopes take a picture. NASA spent $65,000,000
on a 2500 lb, 8ft diameter disc of GLASS so we could see across the universe. Polished over an 8 month period, the mirror was declared to be the smoothest surface ever created by man. Telescopes, cameras, webcams, binoculars, and everyday glasses made with plastic optics are garbage. Plastic is a solid.........Glass is a liquid this makes a difference.
Glass is used because it is more stable at a wider temperature range. Pretty important when you are focusing things that are light years away. It's a proven FACT that acrylic provides better clarity for the aquaria than glass.

Glass is a liquid?
That is one of the oldest legends around.

well i dont normally see 1000+ gallon tanks being made from glass, but if it were me, i would just build it out of concrete and have one big viewing window. less cost and less worry.
Hi, i am thinking exactly that but just dunno how to do it. I spoke with the custom tank building company and they said it would be way too heavy to move and way too costly to have someone to build it in my garage. any ideas how to do it myself maybe or know someoen? living in toronto canada.

hm, i dont really have an opinion on this becuase all my tanks are glass but is considered small on this site (biggest is 75 xP)

but about the black silicone. I read somewhere that it is better than clear silcone because the black doesnt not allow a lot of sunlight to get through it so that no algae will grow in the silicone if water gets in. This in turn prevents the silicon from cracking because it was something like, clear silicone will maybe get algae in it causing it to lose its grip and fall apart.

thats what i read o.o dont know if its true or not

Purpose built 6 sided corner aquarium 95 UK gallons (115 gallons US) 8MM Acrylic was £465 ($930 USD) Wheras the Juwel Trigon 350 (77 UK gallons -93 US gallons) was £600+ ($1200 USD) My acrylic tank fits exactly where I want it to and has space in the corner behind it for my filter etc. It is impossible to see any joins whatsoever and is crystal clear. It will not go yellow with age, nor will any other cast acrylic aquarium. Has anyone ever seen yellowed aircraft windows, I haven't & I fly 10 or more times a year !!!

I agree with the members who said, once you truly get a monster fish tank. Acrylic makes you feel better that it wont break or leak as easily. But getting somethin 300 gallons or smaller. I would definitly go with all glass. imo

Would acrylic do this??? Im sure most of you guys have seen this but I still think its hilarious in a tragic kind of way.
It's not impossible to do that to any acrylic tank if you hit it with something that heavy. A 20gal acrylic tank is only 1/4 thick so it would not take much effort to make it explode.

I question the same thing. The only advantage to an acrylic aquarium is that it's lighter, and that only matters when you're moving it.

IMO Glass > acrylic
Don't forget easier to heat and keep heated.... Stronger.. and clearer lunless your tank is starfire...

Oh.. But scratches easy. And about as many cons as glass and as many pros :) just my opinion..

Kinda like fish... Everyone has their own opinion on which is the best :)

I woulud have to say I was a fan of glass all the way even for the bigger tanks but after reading all of the threads here I will have to do some reasearch on acrylic tanks. This was one of the best topics I have read so far in my short time as a member. Thanks to all! I really liked the stone creation background from the Wolf member (sorry couldn't remember your name exactly) but I am definatly going to try that application for a background thanks again to everyone. I love this site.

Lol that was funny but in a bad way lol. I had acrylic I was so careful that was afraid to sneeze near it thats how easy it scratches . Would never use acrylic for a fish tank again.
I do use it for front on few reptile cages as buy it cheap enough and holds heat real well
