Even Starphire glass is not completely clear, instead the heavy green tinge it has a slight blue tinge. It is not to say that it isn't clear, just not as clear as quality acrylic.

There is definately some great informtaion here guys, and both types of material obviously have their characteristics. But my question to you all is, if I ever wanted to build my own tank lets say 400-600 gallons, either all-glass or all acrylic. Is there any diferrence when it comes to safety issues or reliability of these two tanks? Or any special pre-cautions I have to follow?

Just wanna add to the acrylic arguement about being easier to scratch: its also easier to buff out...
But I agree with the person who suggest glass for 300gal and smaller and acrylic for larger...

buy the look of your replys you have already made up your mind that glass i better which may be the case with tanks made in the US as some of the pics i have seen of tanks made in the US they are made real bad with some silly looking access holes in the top

my tank is made the same as a normal glass tanks with normal centre bars
not like a sealed box with holes cut out of the top
.....
Yeah! I believe you found the reason! Never understand why they make those acrylic box.

You tank looks very well built! How thick the acrylic is? 13MM or 19MM?

Thanks.

I have had a tank that had fish knocking the side so much that it weakened the seams. Acrylics are made as one piece and so are better for aggressive fish.

Yeah i think its unanamous! Glass is the better option. Acrylic "BOWS" under pressure and so gives a distortion property as well as losing clarity through surface scratching. So whether big or small in construction, acrylic will lose its visual qualities. Who gives a toss about the weight, once your show piece tank is in place, how often are you going to move it around, its not like its a coffee table or anything!

TCZeli, when comparing tank prices, acrylic to glass or glas to glass, the height if the tank affects the price, your tenecor price was for a 36" tall, while glass cages was only 25"m there will be a substantial price difference there.

i won't risk the scratches i will only use glass even if i were to do a 1000+ i would do it concrete with a glass window OR if i were to bend to the acrlyic then i would do BOTH like some zoos do put acrylic in the back then press glass aganst it to prevent scratches. BUT i don't have the room for anything over 300 (i might be able to go bigger) so a 1000+ is out of the picture for me

gotta love how much lighter acrylic is and how much stronger it is once you bump something into a glass tank and shatter it you''ll see why people buy acrylic but then again the hole scratch thing is a pain i love being able to use a razor blade on my tanks can't go near an acrylic tank with a razor blade

I've been told that you can get some kind of film or something to put over acrylic to prevent it from scratching so eazily anybody else heard of this ?
