Man this reminds me of this one time when I went to college in Providence, RI.

I always knew that acryllic scratches easily, due to the fact that I use to own an acryllic device (I would rather not discuss its' use over here, but that it held water in it also) and it always scratched when I had to clean it. Even on a normal sponge, the rough side will produce very slight scratches. Thats why I usually prefer glass.

So anyways, my roomates decided that they wanted to have fish tanks, so i decided to tag along and see what was up. One kid was looking at tanks and he picks out an acryllic one, and I tell him that its gonna scratch so damn easily. He didnt listen to me. Well initially I wasnt going to get something but once I saw some small-aquarium-sized catfish, I couldnt hold myself back. Anyways I got myself a glass tank and you could compare the wear to the tanks as soon as we got back to our dorm room. by the 2nd month i had 2 small scratches on my tank but the kid's tank was scratched as hell. And most of it was done by his own fish.

So yeah, glass over acryllic any day.

Sounds like u smoke ganjA?

What are the chances of an acrylic tank leaking compared to a glass tank?

this is the #1 problem.

Everyone in the house is already loosing sleep over the 55 Gallon leaking. I've had a couple of glass tanks leaked on me in the past (10 Gallons)

I saw a 150G acrylic tank with stand for $700 CAD, great deal for a brand new one imo. I think its 5x2x2 and the 2 front corners are rounded, but the one on the back is not, does that make the acrylic tank just as likely to leak/crack/w.e as a glass tank?

Also, the tank does not have the eurobrace, its like a standard aquarium top, with the rim and 1 supporting bar across the middle.

As far as I know the acrylic tanks don't have seems, the tank is either formed from one large piece or the sheets are fused together, which is permanent.

..........so what kind of tank did I see?

Acrylic on the front and sides but glass on the back?

here: The corners on the front looks like the tank, the back's corners look like the ones with the eurobrace

if you buy a new quality glass tank, set it up properly, leaks should be a non issue.

I had fish for 20 years, and had one tank leak back in 1992. thats it.

its when you start buying the used setups that have been drained and filled several times that your chances of a leak go up.

I don't think your family needs to worry about the 55. I have a 150g in my basement and I am not worried. its built solid and well made (by Aqueon). it should go 20 years before I need to start worrying about resealing.

ps Kevin you might be interested to know that the 1500g acrylic tank at big al's hamilton sprung a leak. it took 10 years for it to leak but it did. it is repaired now though.

all tanks can leak, glass or acrylic.

but the chances are generally rare enough that it should not stop you from enjoying the hobby IMO.

<runs down and checks tank for leaks lol>

I wish I could say that with confidence. I've had 3 10 gallons leaked on me in the past, I started with 2 10 Gallons and they both leaked one time or another, then I got them exchanged through warrenty and it leaked again. I guess everyone is scarred.

It doesn't need to happen often, just once, and thats the end of my hardwood floor. Does Canadian home insurance insures water leakage from fish tanks?

Oh and glass tanks/ acrylic tanks are just as likely to leak, right?

okay, but realize that 10g tanks are not as well built as big tanks. at least in my opinion

they are made really really cheap, a dime a dozen. thin glass, thin seams, not much quality control. you get what you pay for. a $15 tank is not built to the same standards as the expensive big ones IMO.

if you invest in a well made large tank, you should not have any problems.

next time your at the LFS check out a well made Aqueon or Miracles brand large tank (eg. the 150g display tank in mississauga) and compare it to a normal 10g tank. you can see immediately that care goes into the big ones. not so much with the little ones. I am not a fan of the Perfecto tanks big al's is selling now. they are NOT well built. the Perfecto 220g has slighly THINNER glass than my Aqueon 150g, which is saying something. (mississauga has a perfecto 220 and an Aqueon 150 side by side and you can see the difference in glass thickness immediately)

the only leaker I have ever had was a small tank too..

the best advice I can give you and your family is to buy brand new, buy a good brand (miracles, oceanic, aqueon). avoid perfecto/marineland's if you can. the quality is not up to par with the others, unless you get one of their 3 foot wide deep dimension tanks which appear to be built very well.

it might help to bring your parents into Big Al's, and let them talk to the staff.

good luck
