GLASS VS. ACRYLIC

so I take it the glass tank would be around 350-400 pounds?

Compared to an acrylic of the same dimensions would weigh maybe 50lbs.

so I guess 3-4 people would be safE to load/unload a uhaul trucks then. Thanks guys

Now I need to decide on a glass tank with starpphire front glass or an acrylic tank. no matter which one I choose, I will be buying from www.glasscages.com. I haven't seen an acrylic tank before so I need to check out a few LFS' to see how they are.

you might want to add that panaque species wil scratch the window .
they try to eat the plexi and iot wil look like it has been sandpaperd .

1/2 inch plate glass weighs 6.28 pounds per square ft. To get square ft, take your length x width in inches and divide by 144.

i will say trying to net 13 fish out of a 300 gal acrylic is no fun, the small openings on top make it very difficult to add/remove rock and even harder to get your fish out. GLASS all the way

acrylic is great to hang from the ceiling.....just cant do it with glass. Something about glass makes me feel safe moving rock around in the tank. It is not as easy to scratch.

Acrylic tanks are MUCH lighter than glass tanks and initally are much clearer as well. they scratch easilly however and usually distort under pressupe so most acrylic tanks are heavier braced and less open on top. Acrylic tanks are bonded rather than siliconed so they hold up well in the long run. Personally I'll always take a glass tank over an acryllic one given a choice but once you reach the 300 gallon size the weight of the glass becomes prohibitive.

I am in the process of custom building a 8x3x2, do you think I should go acrylic? I was going to build with glass...

I prefer the acrylic and I use a plexi cleaner that is anti-static so the static issue doesnt exist for me. The plexi is lighter and easier to use for me, thoug it is slightly more expensive. It does scratch easier than glass as said, but I dont find it to be an issue as my printers hang on the wall. The cleaner I use leaves a film behind which is anti-static and dust repellent so the only cleaning I have to do is an occasional light wipe with a clean cotton cloth.

Gotta go with acrylic on this one. Had a glass tank but it leaked. Acrylic ever since. Scratching is an issue, but I'll take scratching over a possible leak anytime.
