how thick should glass or acrlic be for something this big. someone told me a 1/2" acylic would do fine, but seem a little small. still thinking about what i wanna do for filtration. u have any ideas

i think im gonna go 1" acylic. do they sell this at home depot or lowes, or do these people sell glass sheets. bc glass will be cheaper, i know it will weigh more but thats fine

you'd definately need to go with something of at least 1" thick for acrylic or glass at 4 feet high.

acrylic thickness calculator: http://cyro.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/cyro.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=WSo9yWxg&p_lva=&p_faqid=133

glass thickness calculator (only runs in Internet Explorer):
http://www.anythingfish.com/Aquarium_glass_thickness_calculator.htm

from the dimensions you gave...
acrylic thickness: 1.6" thick
glass thickness: 1.1" thick

but keep in mind that the acrylic calculator is on a site trying to sell you plastic and make money, so the values are probably a little high

hey usmctanker kudos on building your own tank will be building my own one day also but i'm a little concerned that you are jumping in without researching it enough your dealing with quite a bit of psi on a sheet of glass that large you can get more volume by building depth into tank and going longer with a split display for the glass will be better for you cost wise ,safety wise thats a lot of water to mop up and it will make it easier to clean the tank do know the trouble it is to clean a tank thats 24 " high let alone a 48"plus the height of the stand just trying to give you a bit of heads up bro.

ya we got all the wood for free so we just wanted to build something. so we search up on building a tank. this gonna be a long project. im gonna post and ask for advice on here as i go so i can learn from the things u guys have done. so far u guys are awsome and have helped me alot. ya instead of one big peace i think i best bet is going to be to split it. it will be stronger and cost less. so i gonna get 2 sheets instead of one big one. my next question is, i was told that this was the best paint to use for the inside (Epoxy Paints by Sweetwater) now is there any other kinds or brands out there that can do the job. i ask bc for this stuff its about 60 bucks a gal and shipping will be sky high. but if i have to ill buy it. i stationed out in the middle of nowhere so i can find Epoxy Paints by Sweetwater at the stores so i would have to get it shiped. so if anyone knows of anything else that will work let me know for sure. thanks everyone for the help
