I have never had any pulcher. They came from the same store at the same time, but still possible I guess.
The pics of pulcher I’m looking at show multiple vertical stripes, not just 2 or so.

Did you know pulcher means beautiful? But the greens are just as pretty, I think.

Follow-up:
The spawning never happened, not sure why, and their colors have gone back to being similar to each other.

Crisis averted; I don’t have to worry about raising kids for teenage parents! Whew…

I wouldn't worry to much. New cichlid parents normally take two or three attempts before they get it right. Some may get it right on the first attempt. And honestly you really shouldn't have to aid them at all till the fish are free swimming. Then time for some crushed flakes.

I feel like I just got them as fry, and I don’t want them to succeed.

Pretty fish—I like the acara shape, and especially those taller bodied fish. Are you saying they are the same species or various unspecified? Quite a bit of color difference.

Yes
They are both the same species, of Andinoacara coerleopunctatus, just from different river systems.
It could be, that the substrate allows the more golden variants to escape predators more easily, and favors that variant.
It could be more turbid conditions do the same.
It could be that more rocky areas, or more vegetated overhangs provide more shelter.
Many of the predators of fish like cichlids are birds in the form of king fishers, wading birds, or eagles.

Where I find the more blue variant, substrate is rock, and bank overgrown.

Where I have caught the gold varant, the waters are turbid, silty, and more open.
