Well, if I read the bag I would never use that anywhere near a fishtank or anything else alive. " Contains chemical(s) which can cause cancer"...'silicate silicate silicate'..... wasn't that enough warning for you? ( I guess not)
I think this is very possibly the cause of your problems

you will probably find the same warning on a bag of playground sand that you or your kinds have played in.

silica dust when inhaled in medium to large amounts (typically when in a workplace working with the products (sand, cement, grout, concrete, mining, etc.) over years or decades leads to increased risk of lung cancer.

this is a workplace product and are legally obligated to put such warnings on the products.

From the 3M website:

Durabilty of Colorquartz Crystals

3M created Colorquartz Crystals by melding the strength of nature with the power of technology. Quartz, one of nature’s hardest minerals, is bonded with an exterior ceramic coating. This coating – which contains inorganic pigments – gives each Colorquartz Crystal its brilliant color and durability.
The color resists bleeding or fading, even when exposed to harsh sunlight, strong pool chemicals, and acid washings. The durable crystals, dispersed throughout your pool finish, withstand chemical wear and mechanical abrasion.

Personally, I would be comfortable eating a tablespoon myself, if someone paid me enogh. :)

I'll give you $5.
